I've been in this boat since RE5.
Yes, there's merits to all the post tank control games, and some are clear standouts. But this sacred cow shit that anything beyond the PS3 era cannot be criticized is fucking gay.
Even complimenting a game that you also criticize is a threat on these retard's wellbeing.
They treat 2make like it's the second coming. I'll admit it's pretty decent, but it's still half a game of what the original was no matter how much copium is ingested.
A few months back I went back and replayed RE7 after several years and it's not bad as I remembered it. Is it incredibly flawed? Very. I also got RE8 at a steep discount. Thought it was eh. Completely alien to RE. It's trying to be this ass baby of RE4 and COD game. Is fun to play? Yeah, I had fun with it. Do I want more of that in the series going forward? No.
I've really had my fill of the FPS and over the shoulder shit already.
The community has always been flawed but I've been 'around' in the online community or what there is of one since probably around 2002 when people were excited about Outbreak and bitching about Code Veronica leaning too far into the 'action' style, but it's only gotten worse over time. The fact that the community is so polarized is probably part of the problem, Capcom seemingly tries to get input from fans but fans of the series differ so wildly in opinion that any changes they try to make based on fan input will naturally be schizophrenic and unfocused. You've got multiple different sides of the 'fandom' [a word I despise using] based on generations, the people who got into the series from the start usually grumbling about wanting fixed cameras again, a huge mass of people who played RE4 as their first entry in the series but they're split between appreciating the fixed camera entries or hating them, then you've got the Nu-Reddit fans who only caught on with RE7 and whine about all of the earlier games being too hard or clunky. In theory the RE4 cohort should be the largest since that game was an absolute fucking blockbuster, but for whatever reason the post RE7 fans are the loudest and most numerous in most normie-oriented channels.
I suppose I would be in the first cohort and I do occasionally grumble about wanting another fixed-camera angle entry [a new game in the style of Outbreak with better controls would be a fucking killer IMO] but I can definitely appreciate the later entries, even the newest ones have some merits, but the werewolf shit was a bridge too far for me. The game itself was great from a mechanics and gameplay standpoint but as so many fucking old school fans say, "it's a good game but not a good Resident Evil game" which is a phrase I dislike since it's overused but it's true. The tone was off as well for it to be an RE game, at least the weird Texas Chainsaw Massacre/creepy swamp people vibe kinda worked for RE7 and took place mostly in a big house so there are some parallels to the original RE. But RE8 felt like it wanted to wear RE4's skin but forgot everything else that RE4 did well. I'd be more than willing to work with it if they just wanted to do OTS style games from now on but they need to get the fucking tone right. I know they're still capable of doing so since they hit it dead-on in the RE2 remake.
But yeah the fanbase has always been pretty obnoxious, even back in the days of that ResidentEvilFan : A New Blood website [which I think is down now which doesn't surprise me since no one else remembers it lmao] you'd have people shitting on great games as early as RE3 for leaning too much into action rather than survival horror, but now most of the people who are mad about the action-oriented shift would consider RE3 quite possibly the best game of the original trilogy. Overall I've mostly had to accept that the third, more obnoxious cohort of fans is always going to be louder than any of the other subgroups and that ultimately these games just aren't really aimed at me/my demographic anymore. It's kind of funny that back in the day the original fixed-camera group and the RE4 OTS style group were warring with each other but now they've mostly assembled in mutual hatred of the third group. People tend to forget how fucking controversial RE4 was when it first released before everyone realized that it was a generational leap.
The newer gen fans really don't get that when people critique the newer games, they're not claiming that the newer entries are totally without merit, or at least I'm definitely not. Maybe it's just a Reddit thing since Reddit has unfortunately replaced traditional message boards and fansites as being the premier 'fan community' concentrators. They'll updoot a shitty, lazy cosplay to the moon and back but if you give a mild critique on RE8 you're negative one-hundred. They also seem to hate Code Veronica the most, which was in my opinion the apex of the fixed-camera games, probably because it's 'too hard' for them. Softlocking is considered a shitty thing for modern games but that was the fucking point, it's supposed to be a punishment for not playing conservatively enough or not planning ahead sufficiently.
