I've never read Fat's books so I'm hoping that even as average as Correia's writing is, it's still better than Rick's. His MH main character would make Paula Smith blush, the stories in that universe got fucking tired a decade ago, and I'm not sure he could be up his own ass more if he tried. Yet still many people leap to his defense online and gladly throw money at his very mediocre creations. Why? Because Larry understands that a cardinal rule of business is "know your customers."

He also understands that if one wants to be a successful author one has to, you know, write and publish books regularly. Many long-dead authors who were barely functional alcoholics with grating personalities are still talked about long after they're gone because they actually gave a fuck about being good at their jobs and releasing work. Patrick will never join that list.

The fuck was MacArthur supposed to do, invade Siberia? That would have been a suicide run. Any invading force coming in from Vladivostok or anywhere along the Okhotsk coast would have thousands of kilometers of nothing to cross before getting anywhere significant, with concomitant effects on supply lines, mechanical reliability, and troop efficiency and morale. The Americans could also kiss direct naval support goodbye after the first few days or weeks depending on what kind of progress they made, and who knows what kind of air support they'd have been able to muster in the region. The Russians had already moved 90 divisions to Siberia in preparation for invading Japan; to put that into perspective, that's as many divisions as the US Army raised in the entire war, and only 21 of those went to the Pacific, plus the 6 Marine divisions. There were hundreds more Russian divisions sitting between Patton and Moscow, including the units that smashed the Germans at Kursk and Stalingrad, and wiped out a German army group in Operation Bagration. If we'd decided to attack them, even with the rest of the Allies and rearmed German units, it would have been a bloodbath.

Leaving all that aside, I'm far from convinced Dugout Doug would have been the right choice for that job. He did well enough in WWI and the landing at Inchon was a masterstroke, but he fucked up the defense of the Philippines and was badly wrongfooted by the Chinese in Korea. Put him up against one of the Russian A-teamers like Zhukov, Konev, or Rokossovsky, or even Chuikov or Vasilevsky, and I think MacArthur would have been beaten badly.

Larry may be pandering to his audience but he pulls it off. Plus he understands that in an adventure story you need to clearly establish good and evil, raise the stakes and then have good triumph over evil (thanks to superior firepower). But oh no! There’s another, eviler guy waiting in the wings! Tune in next week once our hero has rested up and we’ll go fight them too!

It’s the same formula that’s been used for ten thousand years. It works.

Patrick isn’t a competent writer so he bungles this basic formula and by the end of Starship Repo you’re not sure who the good guys are, whether they won or not but you’re very sure that an animatronic Donald Trump is the only good guy in the whole book.

Yup. Fun. Between heavy metal orcs, trailer park elves, his takes on the wolfman and frankenstein MHI is a fun read. The hard magic series was pretty good magical noir, and the son of the black sword series is pretty damned good epic fantasy. Just finished servants of war and I enjoyed that as well.

Is he Shakespeare? No, he doesnt use enough scatological humor, fart jokes, crossdressing for comedic effect, and he writes almost no sexual content, but then again he isnt writing plays for 16/17th century britbong commoners either.

Patrick on the otherhand, doesn't write for anyone.

Definitely, I've enjoyed and continue to enjoy Larry's works just because I'm not expecting Pulitzer Prize-winning prose, I'm expecting action and adventure, the equivalent of a Netflix movie I can turn on and mindlessly enjoy. It works, he's good at what he does and he strips a lot of the pretensions out of his writing in my opinion

Is he the best author I've ever read in my life? No, not necessarily, but he's pretty good in that he knows his audience and gives the people what they want

Contrast that with Fat, who does not know his audience (because he doesn't have a real one, we're his audience) and doesn't give them what they want (massive raging chimpouts)
