They have been paired historically most of the time, but I don't think they need be.

Like, you could plausibly have a platform that maintains that the America's governmental system and culture is awesome, emphasizes that the American government's role is exclusively to represent the American people and their interests, and that racism/sexism/xenophobia are bad.

Ideally, we get something like that by splitting the vote. But we've reached a point where compromise and the principle of charity is being replaced with an us/them mindset among the parties, and a replacement of debate with Hegelian dialectics (think of the rhetoric when one side talks about the other and you see the meme: all conservatives are racists/all liberals hate God and America). You stifle creative thought and isolate people in an echochamber. Both sides do it, and both sides are to blame for their fringes being immune to any sort of rebuttle and evidence by relying on a shill gambit. The key to a good representitive government is empathy and maturity in the face of opposition.

There's been plenty of times in American history where people have combined nationalism with tolerance. Usually you'll hear them talking about America being a melting pot that contains all of the various strains of humanity and mixes them up into a stronger whole, or whatever.
