It unironically is. If you try taxing corporations they will find either loopholes in the legislation OR dump the additonal expenses on their customers, which will make everything more expensive for normal people. The only solution I can see is - really - a complete ban on consoomer plastics since taxes and fees won't work.

Would would they moan though? Coke already sells retro glass bottled version of their drinks as a pseudo collectible that people happily buy. If they scrap plastic in the name of global warming/microplastics, I doubt there would be much outcry. They could replace the plastic bottles with more expensive but snazzy looking glass or aluminum options that I'm sure people will eat up and those that aren't drawn in by slick presentation or don't like the cost can stick to cans or fountains.
I think your getting a little too into the doom and gloom, friend. We are starting to slowly see that shift from away from disposable plastics as (at least where I live) people regularly bring their own bags to stores, bringing their own cutlery or cups to certain restaurants or cafés, and businesses try to keep plastic use to a minimum. The US still has a way to go, but maybe the microplastic concern will get people to be a little more wary of plastic products. If the US was able to make the shift from using Styrofoam everywhere (especially as food/drink containers) then I think we can make the shift from plastic too.

Your friend does not understand basic supply and demand. There is an oversupply of these things, and who is going to buy them in the future? I bet you the average Funko fan is also motivated by, "they will gain value in the future guys don't worry". The only people who are making money here are those who own the Funko branding and companies that license their IPs to be made into shitty collectables.
Pretty sure this was the mindset behind the Beanie Babies craze of the late 90's and when the bottom fell out of that it crashed HARD. To this day I still see beanies pop up in thrift stores for literally a dollar or two apiece, some of them are even in those protective plastic cubes that were sold at a premium to collectors back in the day. The local video game store where I live has a shelf dedicated just to Funkos and a lot of them are in the $3-5 range because they just don't sell.
Beanie Babies are pretty much worthless now. I was given a whole bunch of mint ones a few years back with "rare" tags, pellets, stitching errors, etc and tried ebaying them. Couldn't even get $5 each out of them.
That's what I mean, the same plays are being used on Funkos. They don't make all of them forever, so if you want to get the Walter White one or whatever you better buy it while it's being manufactured and shipped or else you're SOL. And much like beanies the Funkos that there are a surplus of just don't sell, hence the bargain rack at the video game store. They just take up space and are generally worthless unless you have the rare ones like the convention exclusives or whatever. Hell, Nintendo amiibos have held their value better than Funko Pops and at least those toys serve a practical purpose for certain video games.

Not to mention that soft drinks just plain taste better coming from a glass bottle, and if you ask almost anyone who's had the "Mexican Coke" that's sold in the glass bottle and uses cane sugar instead of HFCS they will almost certainly tell you how much better it tastes and how they don't mind paying more for it or needing to go to a different store to pick it up.
Bu that's not already happening despite the fact the Coke in glass bottles is already becoming easier to find in the US since that is the global standard.

The things were so in demand that people would book special international trips to London just to get the things when they premiered since back then they would premier in London first and then get shipped globally later. Beanie Babies were insane. I had some as a kid that I got second hand immediately after the market crashed and I loved them, they were good stuffed animals and a young Sleazy very much liked reading in bed with them, but the speculator craze for those things was something altogether special and I don't think we'll ever see anything quite like it again on that sort of scale. Even the markets for something like Funkos aren't NEARLY as insane as Beanie Babies got.
I think it also comes down to this younger, modern, generation striving to apply labels to themselves.
