Police would have accidentally shot Barb when trying to arrest Chris in my state, but at least she wouldn't be having to live in this hell now regardless of the trial outcome so truly a mercy killing.

Initially, he didn't. From the early set of jail letters, he was certainly out of it. And now that he actually returned to his house instead of trying to strike out on his own, he probably thinks that he did nothing wrong, again

Now that I think of it, the offense was "Incest with child". Virginian law only recognizes the parent as the initiator of incest, not the child. Chris was the child, so by definition Barb was the one who initiated it.... and she was unable to testify.

I feel like becoming a Christorical figure is like an unfortunate curse that ties you to this man for eternity. Imagine you just want to open a card shop where kids can play and trade Pokemon cards, but now your history is forever intertwined with Chris. No matter what happens you are forever part of this series of unfortunate events which is Chris' life.

Chris has main character levels of plot armor. His entire life is a sitcom and no matter what he does he'll always be right back in time for the next episode.
