Bullshit, America has had a clear divisions by culture, race, religion, and ethnicity since the Revolution. And its nonsense to frame the causes of cultural and racial tensions as purely being the Democrats fault. When Rebublicans suffered an embarassing defeat in '08, their solution was to have states pass voter ID laws, even when it became clear the real purpose of those laws was to make it harder for typically Democrat voters without the resources to camp the DMV or have a passport.

If Trump loses, especially by a large margin, it would be more unifying than anything, considering Trump cannot stay on message without making an ass out of himself. Our government depends on compromise, but every asshole now wants their policy to be the hill they die on. For fuck's sake, compromise is the only way we got the damn thing started (democratic/republican elections and slaves counting for nothing or one person in the population to determine representitives). They need a real reinvention, and to find new votes. If the Republicans could drop just a few things from their shit list they could actually be doing much better even without gerrymandering.

-Gays tend to be of higher socioeconomic status and economically conservative. But for many their only option for years has been to vote Democrat over the party that keeps pushing bullshit like conversion therapy and trying to keep them from marrying. If the Republicans dropped that and instead embraced groups like the Log cabin Republicans I could see a lot of gays, particularly men, switching from the Democrats.

-Hispanics tend to be conservative and would probably approve of some of the Republicans ideas, but many feel alienated by the party. The "build the wall" chant is only the latest message that says in not-so subtle terms that the Republicans do not see them as "real" Americans, or often even as people.

-Muslims are the situation of the gays and Hispanics combined (higher socioeconomic status and culturally conservative). But they look at the bigotry they get from the Republicans and see the Democrats as their only option.

These three groups could probably be swayed to vote Republican in the future, but if the party tries to campaign for their votes or even ease up on the rhetoric they risk angering their base. It's a gamble for sure, but it's a gamble that the party might have to make.

This is completely true. Hell, GOP outreach to Muslims was actually pretty high up through the 2000 election. Just a quarter of a century ago, George H.W. Bush won the Asian vote. It's been a more advanced slide over the past sixteen years, fueled largely by population growth among Hispanics, but aided by a leftward shift in voting habits by other minority groups. The root of the issue (which is a bit of a simplification; it's just really, really complex) is the socially conservative, economically populist-leaning/illiterate people, who, before the Goldwater/Nixon/Reagan shift, were the Democratic Party's base. It's like a game of ideological hot potato.

It's very likely that Republicans have lost these groups (along with Millennials) for the next 40-60 years, the only chance they have now is to drop the Tea Party republicans and the Evangelicals and switch gears into Libertarian values centered around freedom of choice (weed legalization, an end to for-profit prisons, etc.).

However its very likely that Trump has probably squashed any chances of that ever happening.

I doubt it will be a 40-60 year adjustment. Duverger's Law (basically the the principle behind the two party system) makes something like that somewhat rare.

I won't lie, part of me really wants to see how insane shit would get.

I don't think anybody knows what Trump would actually do. The wall isn't getting built and even if it did it would fail, that much is obvious. That said if he won and he had a republican congress you'd see widespread privatization of state assets (national parks is a target in the GOP platform for example), financial regulations would all be chucked in the garbage, and he's fill the supreme court with far-right lunatics who would hold back any and all social progress for decades on end.

Oh, and we'll probably end up invading Syria if his public statements are anything to go by. A war we would most assuredly lose just like we lost in Iraq. On a broader international level he's going to alienate all of our allies, nobody will want to work with him, and if he gets his way China and Russia are going to take advantage of his plans to seemingly erode American military power in the rest of the world.

Trump could do a lot of crazy shit with the executive office. But I don't think anybody knows what it will truly be other than it won't be good. I'd imagine he'd take Obama and Bush's habit of fucking with journalists to absurd new levels and I can't imagine him being big on human rights and civil liberties.

A lot of what he says he's going to do either is either going to cost us a shitload of money to do nothing (ban on Muslims, the wall) or have negative worldwide consequences (pulling out of the WTO and NATO, defaulting on the debt) that it's unlikely that anyone in the senate would push forward his ideas.

But then again, its up to Congress to put forward these measures in the first place, checks and balances blah blah blah.

Edit: Let me tell you why it isn't impossible for Trump to lose PA. Our state was hit hardest by the outsourcing of steelmills during the 80's. It's why huge parts of the land are just shitholes.
