Also in the US I think it's actually pretty rare to be deficient in folate, iodine, and other micronutrients that are associated with learning. Everything, even pop-tarts, has folate and calcium and stuff put into it now. I bring this up cause the free breakfasts at my school were a carb and sugar fest - processed corn flakes, bagels, juice, corn-syrupy fruit cups. And that bagel and OJ, while appreciated, was not gonna save my ass if I didn't study.
Being poor in 2023 looks like relying on cheap surgary foods that make you fat, not getting rickets or passing out from lack of food. School breakfast was designed to solve the problem of families not having enough food, but now basically everyone has enough food, we just struggle with getting the right kinds of food. I don't think Pat thinks about this. In his mind poverty is an Oliver Twist pastiche or Tiny Tim in space or whatever.
Then again why should I get butthurt about the thoughts of a man who talks about poor kids "acceling".
