This isn't unique behavior to same-sex pairings, penguins in particular can be pretty aggressive about kidnapping chicks if they don't succeed in having their own for the season. Many other animals kidnap, destroy eggs or kill offspring to force out competition or make the female (or sometimes male) available. It's likely that instinct being triggered, they're still animals without conscious human concepts of malice or sexuality.
