France has a higher cost of living on average than the US. He's also in their third largest city.Well, he's gotta take into account the relative (I don't know if this is the correct term) level of expenditure of both countries, which is to say, his 40K may buy him a similar lifestyle in France than the 200K may buy him in the US.
Which is why some people from other countries, when they can, work remotely for US companies and get paid their rates, but that rate goes a much longer way in their home countries. Tho I'm not talking about local branches of US companies, or things like callcenters in other countries (see: poo in loo), that pay the local rates anyway. You gotta be good enough that the US company to want to work with you directly from all the way out there.
