We got married forty years ago. It was a different world back then. The only way anyone was getting an annulment is if their second name was Kennedy. Anyone else could go whistle. These days, everybody gets them -- almost regardless of circumstances.
I will say this though. The only reason I'm still married forty years in is because I married an observant Roman Catholic. An anglican would have dumped my ass years ago. For a long time, it was touch and go whether the priest was actually going to marry us because I was struggling with his arguments about divorce. I just thought it was reasonable to acknowledge that somebody could change their mind at some point down the road and when that happened, divorce would probably be inevitable. He wasn't having any of that. Either I took my obligations seriously, or we weren't getting married in his parish.
