Thank you all for the help, I really appreciate it. I’m actually surprised at how nuanced the competitive side of the game is. I’m not expecting to go pro or anything but it’s nice to not be a complete idiot at competitive battles.
If you ever need help or something shoot me a pm, I'd be happy to help or shit. Or just jump here as well, whatever. I'm actually looking to go hard on vgc this next couple of years.

Bro I just want to go on a region spanning adventure with the Shiny Latias I caught in BDSP. Why do I need to spend more than a half an hour to get to the first trade station or pay a subscription fee for pokemon home/bank/[Live service that will be dead within a decade]?

It's the best game to get into competitive because it's the current one. Also, there have been a ton of changes to available mons and their movesets. Terastillization is also a huge mixup that certainly has not solidified into a consistent meta yet. Not to mention that it's easier than ever to breed Pokemon if you're a sperg about legit mons (I'm guilty)

The quick run-down on IVs and EVs is that Pokemon are born with IVs (genetics) and they earn EVs. Any given stat on any given Pokemon can have a number of IVs from 0 to 31. They are born with these and the only way to change it is to trade a bottle cap for hyper training. This can be bred for.

EVs are earned every time your Pokemon gains experience in a battle, even if it's not involved. This is not updated for Gen 9 but it's a good start and otherwise I would use serebii to look up mons you think are associated with a certain stat. Pokemon give certain EVs when you defeat them and a Pokemon can earn up to 252 for any one given stat, can max two this way, and then trickle a few leftover points to a third stat. Or you can split their 510 possible EVs any retarded way you want.

Breed for IVs, kill for EVs. EVs can also be erased with certain berries and raised by vitamins or feathers.
Is it possible to build a team without having to breed at all or is there a benefit to breeding for certain moves?

I want to go hard on it as well, when I have the time. Let's all lynch Wolfe Glick together, or some anime bullshit like that

Bottle caps are 20,000 Pokedollars a pop now and also drop from Tera Raids. So if you'd rather grind raids for caps and money than hatch eggs, there's really no need to breed anymore for the most part. Egg moves can be passed instantly with a mirror herb and a picnic as mentioned earlier in the thread.

One exception is building for Wonder Room or Trick Room. Pokemon with minimal speed work best in Trick Room, and you can't use a bottle cap to lower a Pokemon's IV. So you have to breed for 0 IV in Speed if you want it. Same for if you want the shittiest Defense/Special Defense possible for Wonder Room

Thanks, I don't have the game yet but I to try some casual vgc battles when I do.

found my first shiny in pokemon scarlet

...and it's a fucking lechonk. it's pink. and female. this actually matters in terms of ability because male and female lechonk have different abilities. of course that would imply anyone would use lechonk in the first place.

It's cute, though. I wish Contests were still a thing.

Also, I can't edit my last post, but to clarify, there's no reason to have 0IV in Defense for Wonder Room. Speed is basically the only trait you NEED to find in the wild/breed for. Good luck to all my niggas trying to find minimum Speed Iron Hands

*AHEM*
I've started playing Scarlet now that I'm mostly done with Violet, and I found this little cutie just outside of Los Platos. That's right—I haven't even reached the academy yet.

I already had my team planned out, but I couldn't resist this one after seeing its evoved shiny form (sorry, Veluza):

Ey! I would use Oinkologne!
kek it's gonna rot in my box, i can't justify using a solo normal type pokemon, even if it is shiny.

so, interesting thing i learned about shinies in pokemon scarlet/violet. everyone knows that we lost the shiny sound and overworld glow so finding them is much more difficult. however, if you're using the outbreak method, autobattling actually is a viable strategy because your pokemon simply won't fight a shiny pokemon. i didn't test the method myself because my shiny lechonk just kinda showed up out of nowhere in front of me, but it's something worth looking into if you're hunting for shiny pokemon that are only /slightly/ different from their normal form, so you won't have to pan the camera around to see if a pokemon has a different eye color or some shit.

Not a huge Pokemon fan but this thread has caught my curiosity. The state of current year Pokémon games seem baffling to me. Two questions for this thread, When was the last good mainline Pokémon game? And when was the last time it seem like GameFreak at least tried to make a good Pokémon game (it does not have to be good it just needs feel like they at least put effort into it)?

SV is good but hamstrung by technical problems. I've enjoyed it a lot, having your box available everywhere is so nice for letting you try out every pokemon you catch instead of just getting caught in using the same six
The last good in all departments was B2W2

SV i feel qualifies for the latter at least, i feel. like i said, there's tonnes of little details and stuff that can only come from a dev that gives a shit.

SV's state i very much compare to skyrim, it's an open world with a lot of fun stuff in it, and most of the bugs can be exploited by the players to break the game in fun ways.

Even Snorlax? It's one of the best Mono Normal type pokemon in the game!

Seriously though, I understand. When I reach the later parts of the game, I'd much prefer more interesting typed pokemon as well.

GameFreak’s problem isn’t that they’re not trying, it’s that they’re so dedicated to keeping things in-house and not expanding too much that they’re now too small to handle such big games on the release schedule they’re currently on.

And yet, Snorlax got cut from S/V, along with Lapras. And those two were also very notable and popular Gen 1 Pokémon.

On one hand, their small development team for a major game franchise does hold them back a lot, but haven't they been shown to be lacking in competence too? It also reminds me of Polyphony Digital, who develops the Gran Turismo games. Gran Turismo 7 had a 5+ year development cycle, and even with that, the game was rushed.

That’s what I meant when I saying that, yeah. They lack the manpower and the full know how. On the one hand, I can appreciate them not wanting to become so bloated with new staff and such that the games lose the appeal they had, which happens with a lot of game companies, but this is reaching the opposite extreme, where it’s actively hitting the product by not expanding.
