Iirc there is very recent, public evidence suggesting he works for an insurance company, which for some reason he refuses to admit, preferring instead to maintain the illusion that he is a successful writer (ignoring the fact that he presents pages of evidence to the contrary every time some publisher operating out of a storage unit cranks out 200 copies).

Well, he's blended it in with his stalkers, but also the SFWA is the closest thing Pat has to an external source of credibility. To him, his membership is proof that he has accomplished something, something other people aspire to. Considering how important to him it is that he is thought of as a published author, it's no wonder he gets so defensive about their reputation being tarnished.
