This reminds me Ian Ironwood and his "[make stupid statement]. LEAVE" approach. They never seem to realize that the stunned silence is due to wondering how a human being could last so long with that much brain damage.

I have a feeling that, assuming this story has any shred of truth to it, the woman he was talking to likely just thought the kid was some adorable slow-in-the-mind and was humoring him out of sympathy or pity or something.
