The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have announced they will step back as "senior" royals and work to become financially independent.

In a statement, Prince Harry and Meghan also said they plan to split their time between the UK and North America.

The BBC understands no other royal - including the Queen or Prince William - was consulted before the statement and Buckingham Palace is "disappointed".

Senior royals are understood to be "hurt" by the announcement.

In their unexpected statement on Wednesday, also posted on their Instagram page, the couple said they made the decision "after many months of reflection and internal discussions".

"We intend to step back as 'senior' members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen."

They said they plan to balance their time between the UK and North America while "continuing to honour our duty to the Queen, the Commonwealth, and our patronages".

"This geographic balance will enable us to raise our son with an appreciation for the royal tradition into which he was born, while also providing our family with the space to focus on the next chapter, including the launch of our new charitable entity."

A Buckingham Palace spokeswoman said discussions with the duke and duchess on their decision to step back were "at an early stage", adding: "We understand their desire to take a different approach, but these are complicated issues that will take time to work through."

The couple's announcement on Wednesday comes two months after the Duke of York withdrew from public life after a BBC interview about his ties to sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, who killed himself in August.

You're right; she could just be wildly exaggerating what someone actually told her, but I'm inclined to believe she made it up wholecloth, for three reasons:
1)she claimed a "South African member of the Lion King cast" told her this. Said member was tracked down and fact checked, says he'snever met her:
They then tracked down Lebo M, the composer (which is not technically a cast member) who is also SA, but he says he "did not remember discussing Mandela"

Holy shit I thought she was talking about the play. That at least is stuffed with South African cast members.
Instead she was talking about the movie, where near negligible numbers were from South Africa. Not just that;
Sitting under a portrait of his friend Mr Mandela at his Johannesburg home, he said: 'I have never met Meghan Markle. This seems like something of a faux pas by her. I have I have never met the Duchess at all. I am the only South African member of the cast and I did not attend the premiere in London.
It's someone who knew Mandela and was not even at the premiere in question.

Poor guy. Imagine having to hear that some literal who is faking herself as an equivalent with your dead friend and because you're the only person in the cast who fits the description you have to confirm as kindly as possible that she's "mis-remembering."

Edit - for some reason the Mail decided to include this picture of Prince Charles, Nelson Mandela and the Spice Girls. Bugger knows why but it confused me so you all get to see it too.

The n word stuff seems so unlikely to me - posh Brits just don’t use that word, it’s too American (and Megs and offspring are way too pale to count as gollywogs or nig-nogs or pickaninnies, which I would believe, linguistics-wise). I suppose ‘negro’ is a possibility?
This is what I was thinking as well. Brits (indeed, no colonials) say "nigger" because it's derived from the Spanish language. It's purely an Americanism that had been exported, predominantly to a younger audience that would generally comment on the royal family.

Even Megs herself doesn't reach the level of "darkie" in my eyes, she looks like a Mediterranean of some type.

Worst she'd get is a 'wog'

(Semi)Quoting a maid from an old movie: "the only throne she should sit on is the one I clean every morning."

It depends if they use the hard g or not.
Muh gingga.
Charles, William, and all three of William's children would have to die, at which point Harry would be next in line. Meghan would only be queen consort. If Harry them died, she'd be shifted off to be queen mother and Archie would be heir presumptive. At best, she'd be regent until Archie came of age.

There's little chance of all of this happening.
Yes, because Liz would have to die first and that's even more impossible.

Whereas Nelson looks like Ginger just grabbed his arse.
Come on, it's Ginger, she probably did.

Ah, sorry. I mean, it's Gingga, she probably did.

I should first make clear that I think Meghan's claims of racism are without merit. But to respond to the claims above, "nigger" is a well-established word in British English. The Queen was certainly alive when it was in quite common use in expressions like "a nigger in the woodpile", the rhyme eeny-meeny-miny-mo, as well as the colour "nigger brown", which could often be found in colour catalogues for paint, wool, thread and so on. For example this Sylko thread: (original flickr link)

The Austin Seven was available in nigger brown in 1923 (archived). Asking your grandparents, if they are alive, may give you more examples (unfortunately many have been memory-holed). Some new nigger-brown items are still occasionally offered for sale by blithe Chinamen who copy the word from old British dictionaries.

"Nigger" was used as the code-word signalling the successful breaching by "bouncing bomb" of the Möhne dam in Operation Chastise in the Second World War. I have summarized the story of this from "The Dam Busters" into a clip I made for my profile:

Actually, that's a valid point that I hadn't considered. There's also "Nigger Head Shag" pipe tobacco, which shows up in old catalogues. While I don't believe Megs, you are correct that the word was in common usage.

I knew the dog was called Nigger but I didn't know this. Unbelievably based. Call Of Duty before Call Of Duty.

I learned ‘pickaninnies’ from a great aunt when she loudly declared there were ‘too many pickaninnies in the doctors waiting room’.

She’s been dead 20 years tho.

I’m not arguing that ‘nigger’ has never been used in Britain in the past, btw, simply that it’s not a believable word for the Royal Fam to have used in 2019-2022, not even the older ones (not even Phil the Green).

IME ‘nigger’ has never had the cultural purchase in the UK that it has had in the US. Here it just sort of faded from use rather than become a terrible, unmentionable, pejorative.
We just moved over to ‘wog’. Keep Calm and Carry On.

FWIW I can totally imagine the Duke of Edinburgh saying that Meghan looked ‘more like a paki than a nig-nog’ or something similar.
