Since we're talking about retroactively transing media, I thought I'd give a western example. Not exactly the same, since the character is actually a transsexual, but similar.
Forbidden Zone is a surreal comedic film by Oingo Boingo before they became Oingo Boingo. It's weird and whacky and one of the main plot-points is trying to rescue a tranny from the Forbidden Zone, an alternate dimension. Because the film was made in the 70s it doesn't skirt around the fact that "Rene" is a pervert who dresses like a woman, or as the protagonist puts it, "it's your brother, he only acts like a broad, he's a faggot."
