The feds fucking raped him with absolute bullshit, trying him hundreds of miles away from where he lived in New Jersey with absolutely zero justification for the venue, while at the same time the whole case was based on an outrageously overbroad interpretation of the CFAA.
Orin Kerr (known for his association with the Volokh Conspiracy legal blog) wrote an
appeal brief raising these issues, and the defense arguments prevailed, but the case was thrown out for the venue issues, without reaching the overbreadth of the CFAA issues.
Somewhat understandably, after spending months in federal prison chilling with Nazis and getting prison tats like a swastika, etc., when he got out after bullshit charges that should never even have been brought finally got chucked, he was a pretty pissed and radicalized dude.
