I suspect one of the ways in which the "remorseful buyers', if you will, attempt to cope with their awareness of how shitty Phil is, is by declining to acknowledge this. Meaning, they give in random amounts, because considering where it's going, and how much more convenient they could make it for the pigroach, is too much for them.
