They're probably saving up those ideas for the next new region. Though I do agree some more variety would be welcome. A fat dozen new forms isn't much exciting. A key point of Pokemon's marketing is to show off a bunch of new Pokemon every new game but not this time I guess.

Oh most definitely since mechanically this game is very sparse. Catching and battling mons is fun for a while but that's all you can really do. There's 5 different biomes for you to explore but functionally they all play quite the same and have the same loot. Pokemon behavior is extremely predictable and samey. Your stuck with only 3 types of pokeballs and some basic stealth tools for the whole entire game. This game is carried hard by the novelty of Pokemon and after 55 hours in I'm feeling the burn.
55 hours? Did you get a review copy, or something?

I mean if we really want to get into it, the games are pretty middling JRPGs to begin with. The card game is where its at and that was feature-complete with Rocket Set and nothing else needed to or should have been released after. Gym Heroes shit up the TCG something fierce and nowadays Pokemon TCG is a disaster area. I like the idea of alignment differences within Pokemon rather than adding 500 useless creatures to the game.
I just want a Dragon Quest Monsters game using what they did in 11 with unreal engine.

Arceus being as bad as it is with people trying to justify the minimal baby steps was similar to Blizzard with tiny small improvements they did to world of warcraft post WOTLK and it only took like an expansion to wash away all the good will. Something is going to have to give.

It's....okay. I like the direction it's going but it still seems pretty flat and restrictive. I also don't like how less attached to my team I am in comparison to the usual games. Part of the fun for me is building a team and sharing experiences via tense battles. It's a lot less like that now and more focused on collecting and unlocking shit.
It's like there's a really good game in here somewhere, but they need to work out all the kinks first.

It's been leaked all week.
Did the leaked version get the patch that fixed the bugs the play-testers/reviewers found? One of my friends mentioned that one of the shops fucked up your credits when you sold to it.

I bought it yesterday and I had to put it down because of how boring it gets. Put about 4 hours into it and I mean, so far it's ok, but I can see how it'll get stale eventually.

I had this problem last night while I was playing it. I got bored really, REALLY fast. My friends have been talking about how addicting it is but honestly, I'm finding that I don't want to play it for hours at a time. It's pretty dull.

I feel as though it's because since it's the beginning, you have to do all those tutorials and talk to people and what not. other than that, wandering a world just to fill the Pokedex sounds just kind of, bland.

So I’d like all your input please.

I cut my teeth on Gen 1. Gave it a test for decades (had stadium, but that doesn’t count) until I was looking for ROMs to fill my R4 and loaded up Black 2. Had a pretty great time, then nothing until Sword. Sword almost upset me because I felt like I was trying to have fun but the game wasn’t for me…. Definitely felt geared towards little, little kids for the most part.

I’m definitely interested in trying to find the high water mark for the series though. Any recommendations for mainline games to try?

The two Gen 5 games are kind of decent, story-wise. Gen 3 revolves around the retarded eco terrorists and the remake adds in an elaborate romp throughout the region (started by some crazy chick) that could have been easily resolved with a few lines of dialogue.

Gen 4 is kind of dry, mostly because of Cyrus' ramblings.

Gen 6 looks good, but the villains are running an Ponzi scheme and their leader is a bigger strawman than what the series normally gives.

Gen 7 is kind of decent, provided that you ignore how fucked up certain people are. But it also has stuff from an parallel dimension invading the islands, which is gay in the first pair of games.

Just stick with either Gen 3 or 5 if you really care about the story. Anything newer has you collecting these special crystals just to wipe out the opposition.

Your experience with the games is very similar to my own. Played Red when it came out, then played Platinum a couple years after that game came out (which is when I realized that Pokemon literally hadn't changed in 15 years) and then played Shield. I grabbed Pokemon Crystal on the 3DS eShop at the recommendation of a friend (it's his favorite in the series) and have really enjoyed that one a lot.

So I'd look at Pokemon Crystal if you want a more familiar experience that is polished up real nice with some new Pokemon and a ton of content; but without all the bloat and stagnation that the series developed later on. I liked the game a lot.

I played it all last night. It has some hiccups, but I’m definitely enjoying the hell out of the game. I think they new stuff is just fresh enough to encourage people who wanted changes while not alienating the ones that like the original setup. I like seeing the side quests that hint at why certain Pokémon have the Pokédex entries they do, and that joke with the first scripted Alpha Pokémon fight was pretty good.

I’ve put in about four hours so far, and I’m really loving the fluidity of the whole experience. Battling is so more convenient feeling. I was skeptical about the emphasis on catching but what really makes it work is the fluidity, how you can either simply throw a ball or engage in a seamless encounter. It’s all about choice and discovery, and that’s really what I wanted out of the game. It’s such a refreshing experience after the condensed railroading of SwSh and BDSP. Yeah, it doesn’t look great, and maybe it’ll start to wear down on me soon enough, but so far I’m pretty happy. The game feels like a real journey again.

Highly recommend either HeartGold or SoulSilver. Has the nostalgia of being a remake of an older generation, with the mechanics introduced in gens 3 & 4. Also the fact that any Pokemon can follow you around adds to the game's atmosphere (I'm still peeved they removed that feature from the series, save one or two instances).

Black/White and Black 2/White 2 are great too. Gen 5 was pretty great, overall.
