The news really needs to avoid giving people tips on amateur chemistry.

Although, I will say, paracetic acid is wonderful for cleaning your glass-top electric stove if you have have any of those black burned on rings that pots can sometimes create that refuse to come up. (I am being serious about this, it really does work well, just make sure you have your range hood at full blast, and that it vents to the outside, and you don't huff any of the fumes)

For all you Kiwi's that want to make your own chloroform, it's bleach (hypochlorite) and Isopropyl alcohol (Isopropanol) for the best yield. If you use ethyl alcohol (ethanol) alcohol, you'll end up with trichloroacetylaldehyde, also known as Chloral, which you might be more familiar with as Chloral Hydrate as well as chloroform. However, each reaction is junky, you get all sorts of crap along with the chloroform.
