Eh, I think it probably has more to do with the popularity of series like the Chronicles of Narnia; "children's fantasy that's secretly a Christian allegory" is a surprisingly large genre, and being able to stick the "religiously edifying" label on something can compensate for a certain amount of shitty writing. Gerry already has a history as a shyster for Jesus. Why switch up a winning strategy? Slap some Bible quotes on a crap fantasy book and the grandmas will eat it right up.
