Using that GoPro is probably better for accuracy, I'd say 5'6'' - 5'8'' so you're right.

The problem with using distance estimations is the field of view is not completely known unless the phone/camera and lens model specifications are found. Perspective distortion makes a lot of similar measurements very inaccurate, that's why it's important to find a vanishing point and a reference object to map along the diverging (outward) lines. Still not accurate but better than "I guess it's 1m away here's a shape".
