Not too fond of caramel on popcorn either, just keep it strictly to butter and salty spices. A pre-made mix made for grilled foods is perfect.
 
Funko's are the equivalent of those stupid Chinese "Zeus" branded peripherals that most shit-tier electronic shops tape around your purchase. It has the aesthetic of a computer peripheral but there is no drive to modify the keyboard/mouse settings and is made out of plastic, oh and it is very fucking unpleasant to look at with all those RGB crap.

I mean, I'm glad no Funko has ever gotten into my place but fuck me if one even was gifted to me, I would politely suggest telling that person, no thanks. Plushies are better.
 
I feel like the last Disney movie that had any sort of widespread cultural impact was Frozen, and that’s nearly a decade behind us at this point.
I think part of is is the whole globalization thing. Not only were the Disney "classics" made with an America-first audience in mind, but the money made it worth it even in the Disney dark age.
Nowadays we have shit like mobile games that make many many times the box office amounts pulled by film, and Disney appears to be pivoting (very unsuccessfully) to the "Pokémon" model. To be specific, Pokémon is a "merchandize and lifestyle brand" that has games, a show and some movies as part of the brand; they are not, as many people assume, primarily a game brand anymore.

Disney has been a lifestyle brand long before Pokemon was, if anything it's Nintendo who followed that path. As a kid in the late 90s, you could get a lot more Disney stuff than Pokemon (or any other Nintendo thing). The only thing that's changed is that since the 00s or so they don't target kids so much as everyone.
 
Chinese, Pakistanis and Turks seem to love this "aesthetic". Fake marble, fake chandeliers, European fashion brands everywhere.

Whenever I was flying for work, you always bump into bored Chinese housewives on solo vacations - Burberry bags, Gucci iPhone cases, and every other kind of braindead purchase you can conjure up. They've no idea what they're doing, they're just emulating successful white people (and failing).

Also why is everything just so... ugly? From the tacky marble walls and flooring, to the ramen slop she's eating, to the cheap plastic and rubber 'kawaii' stuff. A lot of money and not a lot of taste.

Then they will be like “wHy cAnT yoU bE mOre lIKe uS” if you present your lifestyle or shame you on your shit when I said “I mean it’s clothing, if it works it works” I once got told I was wrong that I think a car is a car if it can get you places. “Because luxury car better lol”

I'm actually really surprised that Funko didn't preemptively protect themselves against the inevitable butthurt consoomers whining about the lack of a non-binary pop figure. So far I only see male and female for sale.

I absolutely hate nowadays that even if you want a nice figure of a character all you're likely to find is a shitty funko because they're so much easier to produce. Even if it's not a funko it's always those cheap looking blind bag figures that all share the same base.
 
I find it funnier that she comes home to all these gadgets that are single use for the most part, then she makes instant noodles (which didn't look appetizing) and watched a show on her tiny phone screen. It reminded me of that jook's to go where she dumps a bunch of sugar into a bowl and shoves one of her pink phones into a mini plastic TV to pretend like she's not pathetically staring at a phone screen eating garbage.

I prefer watching movies on my phone because tvs take up a lot of space and I'd rather use my space for anything other than a giant, redundant screen that i would only use for a few hours a week anyway. Watching a movie on your phone feels cozy af, like curling up with a book.

Yeah thinking back even further, it really began (no surprise) with the Boomer Consoomers when they were growing up in the 50's/60's. They were the first generation to grow up with mass-media and advertising targeted directly at them. Before that ads were largely targeted towards housewives (e.g. the original "soap" operas on radio) and more commonly touted the virtues/benefits of a better product, rather than buying crap you don't need just for the sake of buying.

I'd say what spawned consooming was the perfect combination of a large, young, impulsive & impressionable demographic (boomers as children), strong economy with more discretionary household spending, development of low-cost production (plastic), all magnified by the universal reach of a visual medium (tv).

Consumerism is a coping mechanism, just like any other.

Nobody can seem to agree, but there seems to have been 450k deaths where Corona was an underlying or contributing cause in the US in 2021, so the degree to which Covid was actually responsible varies, and those deaths tend to be in old and unhealthy people to begin with.
Meanwhile there were just over 100k deaths from overdose in 2021, the majority of those in people under the age of 35. In 2019, for the first time in history people became more likely to die of overdose than of car accident. There were 47k deaths by suicide in the US in 2021.

Trinkets and distractions are cheap and they provide an immediate hit of reward. Wanna know how much worthwhile shit like wood costs? On January 2nd 2019, lumber was trading at $329 per 1000 board/feet. January 2nd 2022 it's trading for $1112, over 3x the price. All materials have become like this.

Nothing spawned consooming, no more than anything spawned substance abuse or suicide. Pathological behaviors have simply become far more pronounced as the post WWII population has begun to vastly exceed opportunity for role fulfillment in society (for reference, US pop in 1950 was 151 mil. In 2022 it's 333 mil). There's an enormous population of millennials and Gen Z who are alive but don't actually have any reason to be, who have nothing and nowhere to build a life, and who thus turn to hedonistic pursuits and extremism in an attempt to cope.

So I guess the point is that modern consumerism is a trend that did largely begin with boomers, but it was a symptom of a problem that's only gotten worse since.
