From personal experience, I can vouch for how that's a hole that you can slip into if you have no introspection and get off more to the act of just buying something, rather than enjoying it. Anyone can have a huge shelf of video games for the price of a single console if you're willing to fill your shelves with old sports games, trashy licenses, and online-only games that don't work anymore.

I mean if you're gonna fill your home with garbage at least be funny about it:

Dollar stores are great for buying chocolate bars for under $1 when you need to make a birthday cake or some other dessert recipe. Oh, and cheap Birthday cards. Other than that, spending $200 at one seems insane unless you were planning some massive party and needed a fuckton of paper plates/balloons/streamers, etc. And even then, that seems excessive.

I still donate my old books to my local library and it seems like the town it's in (very, very small town. Hamlet sized, even) is extremely grateful for getting new items into circulation because most people there still seem to run on that mindset. Rent the books before you buy. Hell, even then, if someone donates books they know will probably never checked out or it's a rattier copy, they sell it in the library book closet for 25 cents. Romance novels are 5 cents if you're desperate.

It's only been with the explosion of apps like Instagram and services like Amazon that I really started to see these "bookish" girls with their hoarding libraries. It made me realize that now, if I am going to keep a book on my shelf, it better be good enough for me to highlight/sticky-note and re-read more than twice. Otherwise, I'm just like these girls. Hoarding books for no reason other than to look "nerdy".

ha this reminds me of /r/mechanicalheadpens . Every once in awhile I see an RPN calculator on craigslist and I'm tempted to pick one up for the novelty. I'll just try and stick to Emacs Calc though. What are you thinking of getting?

A TI-84 Plus CE graphing calculator, that also has the ability to learn more about the Python language. Now some might say that Python is a language that may seem easy to anyone wanting to do it, but I think it can come handy with my coding homework if I forget about a basic variable or function that I need to use for my homework.

i have inherited books from a bunch of old people who just left it to me. like, I have boxes and boxes of old books now.

they're all good shit, ranging from literary classics to good fiction and even topical books on stuff like adult education, history, and police procedure.

probably keeping it all since it feels nice to be able to thumb through stuff and chill.

also, 5 copies of the anarchist's cookbook (or was it bible?)

I wish I’d been able to nab a screenshot of someone suicide baiting and using their recently deceased grandmother for asspats (in a single post), but I’m afraid you’ll have to take my word that that really happened. There’s also a disturbing amount of people making their baby’s birth about Sneak.

There was also an exceptional community post of a Sneak collection master thread, however as of posting there are nearly 700 comments of people clamouring to get “elite” points so they can spend more money on this fucking brand. I’ll hand it to them, they’ve really mastered the art of keeping people hooked in an endless cycle of brand consumption.

Couponing also has elements of "winning" and gaming the system. It's the extreme version of people who'll but things they don't particularly want because they're deeply discounted and it makes them feel like they're getting one over on the shop. They've never heard the advice that 20% off is 80% on, you're not saving money unless it's something you were planning on buying anyway.

You're not wrong. People love stickers and would even buy £2+ stickers of a popular character. Just go on Etsy and type [game, anime, TV show, etc] stickers and get lots of overpriced vinyl with a pretty picture on it.

The thing is with stickers is if you make it yourself at home, it costs around £10 for 20 sheets of vinyl (50p per sheet). Each sheet can hold around 18 6-7cm stickers. 50p÷20 (rounded up)=2.5p per sticker.
Sell the sticker for £1.50 (or more depending on demand) and that's an insane profit margin coupled with the high demand. It's serious business.

If you want quality, companies like StickerApp can get high quality stickers printed, with options for holographic effects for 35p-45p per sticker and that's still excellent profit.

Thanks for reminding me of WaifuDynamics and the autistic gun sperg community that loves to buy colorful stickers into guns. Its like the people haven't learned from CS:GO's gun customization and decided to apply their fetishes in real life.

Couponing is almost the flipside to rampant consooming. Having met people absolutely obsessed with saving money and using a coupon for everything, I can imagine the MoneySavingExpert forum to be an absolute hive of untapped autism.
