I either do a super thin layer of frosting, or else just dust the cake with some powdered sugar. (Powdered sugar on spice cake is to die for.) It's just the perfect amount of "extra" and it keeps the cake nice and moist.
Starbucks isn't terribly good coffee and is wildly overpriced. They're popular because the reason you mentioned, they really chock their drinks full of syrups and flavorings to try to make it more fancy. Their food isn't too bad in my experience but it too is wildly overpriced.
My sweet tooth basically died the second I graduated college, and apparently that's a pretty common thing. At this point cheese and carbs are more of a problem for me than refined sugar ever was.

You could always grind your own burger meat. It's insanely easy and you can choose what cuts of beef you want to use and how much fat is in the mix.
Get a sirloin steak, season it, chop some garlic on top of it, add a few chilli flakes and mince it yourself. You'll know exactly what's in it and you'll have a much nicer burger that way.
