Why do psychology majors hate Freud?

The thought of The Oedipus complex, Penis envy, anal retention, sex being the main driver of our actions and having our lives determined by our childhoods, are too much for some people to bear.

Easy to reject and deny than contemplate it may be real and accurate.

Freud's ideas are mostly a reaction to the vicious sexual conservatism of the Victorian era, he has some fun ideas IMO but his philosophy largely boils down to nearly every corner of the human mind being related to sexual development and suppressed sexual desire (probably not terribly far off the mark during the era of his practice). in the case of the wimminz I'm sure they're not impressed by Freud's assertion that a critical stage of female psychosexual development is the traumatic realization that they do not have a penis, which eventually manifests as the conscious desire to bear children to fulfill the subconscious desire to obtain a penis

He was a cokehead who spent most of his career interviewing the mentally ill and extrapolating their responses to the general population.
When he got an answer that didn't match his hypotheses, he'd evoke other, unfalsifiable, hypotheses to avoid admitting that, maybe, he was wrong.

He deserves praise for taking psychology out of the realm of philosophy and into the realm of science. But many of his assumptions were wrong.

Because Freud he was cokehead pervert who just made up shit to his convenience. He didn't start spouting the idea that monogamy is unhealthy until after he started fucking his wife's sister.
