So I decided to watch the entirety of Goodnight Burbank. I'm going to make sure to be as neutral as possible, and give quite the fair review.
Spoilered cause TEXTWALL

First off though, I'd like to mention that finding any full episode of this show is darn near impossible. The episodes on the Goodnight Burbank website refuse to play. I turned off Adblocker just to make sure that wasn't causing issues with the video player, and nothing changed. After searching around several other sites, I think I've discovered the issue. The video that is displayed on their website is, I think, the video link to Hulu. I think this is the cause because other video sites that say their content provider is through Hulu have the same error. Since the show is no longer on Hulu, the video link is dead. :story:

Also, searching for “goodnight burbank what goes up episode 1 hayden black” on Youtube doesn't bring up the first episode. Odd that that wouldn't come up right? Odder still, I managed to find an account at this link https://www.youtube.com/user/GoodnightBurbank that has the first 3 episodes. It joined in August 23, 2007, started uploading nothing but promos for the show around 4 years ago, until 3 years ago it uploaded a strange little video entitled “Take The Credit”, written and produced by Black.

This strange short starts with a terrible joke. A man is walking around with his head face down on a crutch. Black sees him and describes him as “an emotional cripple.” Cue a 6 minutes long credit sequence. Now, I was initially confused by this, until I realized it is some kind of weird short film, in which the 'joke' at the beginning is the film which is followed by an overly long credits sequence. You can tell it's supposed to be a joke sequence because an early credit includes “Wardrobe Master's Mistress – Tyra Banks.” I actually kind of think this is a little bit of a clever idea for a short film, but even this idea is botched. It goes on way too long with nothing really to keep you engaged, especially since the entire joke seems to be that the credits are really long. The other problem is just a lack of effort being put forth with the jokes. For instance, there is a credit for “Catering.” That is a setup that is screaming for a funny catering business name. What does Black write here? “We Love Food Inc.” So that about sums up the level of effort being put forth. All that needed to be done for this short film to work was to write some funny credits, and that was still to much effort for Black. He also still manages to throw his name in there by having the credits isolate his name as the Producer (2:56) and at the end calling it, “A Hayden Black Motion Picture”. The final line of the credits is seriously, “In memory of Hayden Black 1978-2012. This movie is dedicated to your tireless vision.” First off, his Wikipedia page lists his birthday '76. Can he not even get his own birthday right? However I will admit, “tireless vision” is the biggest and best joke of the whole credits sequence.

Please note I was only able to find the first 3 full episodes. I tried finding the 4th but every site I found either didn't have video link, or was some shady site wanting me to sign up for some free account.

So starting up the first episode of Goodnight Burbank, and one of the first few lines in the entire series involves co-anchor Whitney Appleby, played by Laura Silverman, and the makeup girl Nadira Farhad, played by Hadeel Sittu. Appleby asks Farhad, who is wearing a Hijab and is Muslim, if becoming a born again Muslim involves blowing yourself up. Seriously, it's thirty seconds in.

There's all sorts of horrible lines in this series, and a lot of them come from Appleby, who is every Christian/Republican strawman thrown together. She's racist, stupid, loves Sarah Palin and Ann Coulter, and is constantly horribly offensive towards Farhad. That's all she is, constantly saying stupid things and being stupid. She thinks black people are afraid of heights because of Mr. T in the A-Team. (starts about 3:35 when they send the black field reporter up into a helicopter)
She asks Farhad if “capitalism is still so new to your people that you're buying everything aren't you? After Farhad comments on how her father was mistreated by people who thought he was a terrorist after 9/11 and it caused him to drink a lot, Appleby responds by saying that Farhad should've stopped 9/11, because, “they all go to the same mosques, somebody had to have heard something.” She is also stated to be on medication and to be insane. This character is definitely the worst in the entire show, so of course she is given the most screen time and the most lines.

The other character with the most screentime is of course Black's character, Gordon Winston-Smythe. Now this character is unintentionally hilarious. Why? Because this character is a self important idiot who thinks he is way more famous than he really is. Black seems to ironically cast himself as himself, and i'm positive this irony is lost on him. For instance, he states that “There's a reason it says 'I Am The News!' on the Goodnight Burbank Twitter account.”, to which Farhad states, “Yeah, it's because you wrote it right?” After mentioning that Black hangs out at a particular Krispy Kreme, he jokes and says he won't go anymore, lest he be overrun by fans the next time he goes there. Appleby laughs and says, “What fans?” They call 911, and when the operator picks up Black says, “Hello, this is Gordon Winston Smythe.” He then waits, apparently waiting for the guy to recognize him, which he obviously doesn't. This irony of Black casting himself as a self-important person with an inflated ego is really one of the only funny things about this show.

At the start of the 3rd episode, Black literally just reads a bunch of his little "Twitter jokes". They're all terrible.
  • White House announces President Obama has granted nine pardons. Eight of them though, were just for today for Joe Biden during lunch.
  • Man dies after being shot from an arrow with a crossbow outside a Toronto library. The library has since called for two minutes 'shh'.
  • French rail company apologizes for role in World War 2 Jewish transportations. They would've said sorry earlier, but they only knew the word for surrender.
  • Vatican involved in gay prostitute scandal. Why all the fuss? They're just doing what Jesus said to do, and turning the other cheek!
It's like reading his terrible jokes on Twitter, accept now it's apparently become acceptable to use as comedy fodder for an actual TV show.

None of the other characters are worth much. The director Yan Bobek, played by Camden Toy, is from Estonia, so he's exactly how you would imagine, mentioning about how he killed people back in Estonianand other awful things. Lighting tech Holly Johnson, played by America Young, is annoying. The only thing she really does is act quirky and then fall down, before getting up and saying, “I'm okay, the baby's ok.” It's funny cause she fell and is preggers! Elizabeth Chivers, played by Miracle Laurie, has Aspergers. That is the start and finish of her character, and she often speaks like a robot. The only other person wort mentioning is Chilton Chivers, played by Cameron Bender, who I initially liked. He was the only character that delivered a smile-worthy line. That is until he tried, and succeeded, to get a field reporter to take off her blouse by implying it would lead to a better job for her. I really lost any goodwill towards him at that point.

So no character is really likeable, and nobody is really funny. The humor is just terrible as well. One notable line involves Appleby asking Smythe if she has something in her teeth, to which he responds with “Yes, you've got a bit of AIDS in your teeth.” Because that's supposed to be funny? They also reuse terrible jokes. For instance, in all three episodes they start the show by saying something like, “YOU'LL DIE BEFORE THE END OF THIS NEWSCAST, WHY? Find out after this word from our sponsor.” Cue creepy smile from Smythe. They do this for all three episodes.

None of the episodes are really engaging either. The first episode is about their lighting technician, some old man, dying by falling off of a ladder, and them having to continue telling the news despite his dead body being behind them. The second involves a car chase, which is so lazily produced it boggles my mind. They don't show a car chase or anything like that, they just show footage from a helicopter flying over some city. No car, no nothing. The third is about some PETA/Animal Liberator taking someone hostage at the studio. They're just boring. The only mildly engaging thing is waiting for what horrible offensive thing Appleby will say next.

Aside from that, the show is just shoddily made and has really horrible editing. The camera constantly moves, shakes, and zooms in. It's really annoying and distracting. The fake news show starts by alternating back and forth between Appleby and Smythe and zooming in on their faces as they alternate saying words. It's stuff like “CAR CHASE. HAPPENING. NOW. GOODNIGHT BURBANK.”

I think the worst example of how poorly this show is made is with how they handle reporting the news. The anchors say a few lines about a story, sometimes trying or not trying to be funny, before you hear a voice say something about switching cameras. They switch to a shot of a field reporter, who says lines about the story that aren't even trying to be funny, before they're drowned out by the same voice telling them to switch back to the studio. It's completely pointless. There is absolutely no reason to cut to these field reporters, when they add absolutely nothing to the show. I'd call it padding, but they're so short I could add up all the times this happens throughout the three episodes and it wouldn't be more than a minute. It's just a really poor decision.

To be completely fair, I will state that the acting seems to be fine, and the show was able to get me to smile a few times. Aside from that, it has zero redeeming value.

Also, the credits go by so quickly they're actually hard to read, except for one credit at the end, which credits Hayden Black as Executive Producer. This one stops for a second, so it's actually possible to read, because Black had to make sure his name was the only one legible.

tldr: The characters are terrible, the show is terribly made, and they should feel terrible. Pew pew.

It sounds like it was trying to be "The Office", only in a newsroom instead of a paper company.

He also retweeted his Facebook and Pope joke from his Hayden account...even though he already posted those jokes as Shona like three tweets ago.

First episode at about 8:06: Is that the Black Nerd?

I really wonder what happened to Goodnight Burbank.
It supposedly got all these positive reviews, "multiple nomibations and awards" [citation needed], and even got picked up by a network... and disappeared after only six or seven episodes?

And now it was taken off Hulu, half the episodes are impossible to find and the production company has been suspended. :(

What caused the demise of the Web's most promising comedy- the first half-hour comedy to be EVER commisdioned by Hulu?

Was it financial problems? Personal ones? Hayden not paying his damn taxes?
What do you think?

D) All of the above.

@Kitlen, AKA the 4chan Meowth Murderer, struck again.

Or nobody cared about the show and it tanked due to overall horrible quality.

What kills me is that they made six episodes in quick successtion, since IMDB gives dates in April-May 2011; then... nothing. Then the six episodes got re-aired by some network later that year and that was it.
And yet Hayden acts like it was a critical and commercial success! He even lied on his wiki about it being in the Top 50 :story:

I can't imagine what it must be like to work with Hayden tbh.
I bet his coworkers must hear tales of his unsurpassed genius all the time, plus the same unfunny jokes repeated over and over.

From the description of Goodnight, Burbank, to his Wikipedia page, to Gen Zed, we see that Hayden is in a rush to be the first at anything in the world. A supreme rush.

It's so rushed that all he can do is take two or more shows and mash them up. He slaps his name all over the damn place and voila. He doesn't bother to do more than 5 minutes of research (see @SteelPlatedHeart pointing out The Midnight Animal).

For all we know, he might be a pleasure to work with. But publicly? He can't keep his ego in check or his mouth shut.

Apologies for the double post, but:

So that's with all the posters.

And didn't Doogie Howser, MD do this shtick back in the 80s?

What's interesting is that Goodnight Burbank actually is on a list on IMDb, for series that premiered in 2011. Apply the proper sort filter and it becomes the list of highest rated series of 2011. Out of 6199 titles, Burbank is currently #1644, with a rating of 6.7/10, which we all know is inflated anyway.

Funnily enough, Black's current Wikipage lists Burbank as being #1641, so it's dropped a few spots recently. :story:

So rather than just stage a background for his vlogs, Shonna sleeps every night underneath the poster of a dead person which says "NEVER FORGET"? That makes sense I guess, I'm sure everyone who lives in NYC has a poster like this hanging in their bedroom:

You know, just so they can be sure history will never repeat itself.

Since Shona's supposed to be a wannabe comedienne, she probably shouldn't stick a poster of a trans-girl who committed suicide on the wall behind her to get her viewers in the mood to laugh. Just saying, there's a bit of a tonal difference.
Also, I thought I might as well post a cap of the linked tweet.

As in CIS PEOPLE THAT ARE NOTEABLE FOR BEING CIS? Nope. Not that I am aware of.

There's no doubt that Leelah's life was a tragedy. I can't imagine the hell that they went through.

I also can't imagine the hell of truck driver not knowing he was going to kill someone that night.

Both scenarios are equally troubling.

So in my search to find Goodnight Burbank episodes, I've come across a wealth of stuff, which I'm still working through. However, I would like to go ahead and post this new show I've found by Hayden Black. After watching this show, I am now finally dead on the inside.

I present you with Teensy Tweets. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC9SMQme7HAxo2Oj73iK0ScQ?app=desktop

It's just a short animated show, about 12 episodes of a minute each, and it's literally just more of the same Twitter "jokes" we've been seeing. Examples include:
  • Whole Foods joke about bags makes yet another appearance, although that is the only repeat I've noticed.
  • "Maybe Renee Zelweger has swapped places with the Rebee Zelweger from the Bizarro dimension. Stranger things have happened."
  • "If they ran Stephen Hawking's voice through Autotune, what would happen to the universe?"
  • "I watched every episode of the Gilmore Girls, right up until I realized they were never going to have sex."
Also the characters look like this.

Even worse, the show is comprised of about 6 animated scenes, but only in the strictest sense of the word. The animation is stiff and not detailed at all, a character turning around is literally just them flipping horizontally, with no in between animation. But these terrible scenes are reused over and over in the episodes, with zero changes. The only thing that changes are which scenes are used in a episode, and the audio. There's no attempt to match lip movements with the audio, it's just the same scene each time.

I don't think any of the characters we see have names or personalities at all. Some of them seem to pray for death, like these poor abominations.

There's also a laugh track, and it is super obnoxious. For one, it's an animated show, so it makes no sense. It reminds me of that claymation show Glenn Martin DDS, which had a laugh track, but wisely dropped it after a few episodes. It's jarring and weird. It's also strange, some of the jokes are more adult material, but some of the laugh track clips are children cheering! And some of the clips are of people laughing like crazy, like this one, about 30-40 seconds in.

Finally, every episode has only a single comment.

I can only hope that Gen Zed is better than this, but, the odds aren't looking great.

A 17-year-old who killed herself doesn't exactly sound 'succesful and inspirational' to me...

@sassyma seed, great find! I wonder why Hayden doesn't mention these anywhere in his self-promotion articles. He could have billed this as "The first EVER animation to combine Twitter jokes and zombie bird foetuses!!!!"

So she hangs them up not because she wants to, but because they make a good set piece for your standup routine.

Hayden...do you even think before you speak? Because that just makes having that poster up even worse. Your exploiting the death of a teen in your show both in real life AND IN-UNIVERSE!!!

Really? He doesn't have to. He is at least smart enough to go to places where he know he won't be called out on his bullshit.

It would be great for him to go to a neutral site that would pressure him about the Alcorn poster, the idea for advertising the trans character above all else, and for misspelling his main character's name throughout all the promotional material.
