My wife and I were fortunate enough to be able to afford a house, but seeing those charts showing declining home ownership, mainly due to relative cost vs wages and availability, have me worried for the financial future of our kids. We'll do what we can for them privately, but this is something that has to be addressed on the national level. I propose the following:
1. No foreigners or dual citizens can own houses or land.
2. No foreign companies can own houses or land.
3. A national property tax based on the assessed value of all homes owned. The tax is zero for people who own one home, small for people who own two, moderate for three, and why the fuck would you want this for people who own four or more. Funds collected from the tax would be used to bankroll tax credits for first time home buyers and whatnot. This would also apply to companies, with some exceptions for home building companies that are actively trying to sell the homes they're building at a fair market value.
The details are a bit hand wavy (because I have no political sway and this is a post in USPG2), but the general idea is to increase the supply of homes by banning foreigners from owning them and disincentivizing people (IE, Boomers) from buying as many as they can as an investment. I hate that I'm suggesting point 3 because I'm generally opposed to more taxes and I don't like that it lines up with with the communists say about landlords. That being said, I get so mad every time I see a Boomer sitting on 3+ houses that they bought for less than the price of one home today lecturing kids that the reason they can't afford a home is because they're lazy (and don't even get me started on investment companies that buy homes just to sit on them). That system is shit and has to go. Homes as an investment earn their profit at the cost of the financial future of subsequent generations, and I think we need to put a stop to that.
Anyway, the odds of 1 and 2 happening are small and the odds of 3 happening are exactly 0% for a myriad of reasons, so this is just a thought exercise. Anyone see any problems with my ideas, other than the fact that nobody in power would ever vote for them? Anyone have better/different ideas? I do not want my kids to live in the pods, eat the bugs, and own nothing.
