When we have a system that is already corrupted into crony capitalism, turning that into an authoritarian state is going to be a nightmare.
You all should watch the HBO show Rome, a drama that spans from the end of the Gallic Wars to the death of Marc Antony. Characters on the show talk about the Republic as if it still has a meaningful existence even after its territory is divided up between three warlords who kill senators at will and rule by decree. I worry that we are experiencing a similar delusion that future generations will laugh and shake their heads at.
Edit: Also, I have known people who lived in dysfunctional dictatorships in Africa and Latin America, and when I've worked up the nerve to ask them about it, every one of them said, "nobody liked it, but we just got on with our lives because we didn't want trouble." Despite all the gun hoarding and posturing about being rebels against tyranny, that has been the attitude of every "average American" to outrageous behavior by our own government as well.
