You all should watch the HBO show Rome, a drama that spans from the end of the Gallic Wars to the death of Marc Antony. Characters on the show talk about the Republic as if it still has a meaningful existence even after its territory is divided up between three warlords who kill senators at will and rule by decree. I worry that we are experiencing a similar delusion that future generations will laugh and shake their heads at.

Edit: Also, I have known people who lived in dysfunctional dictatorships in Africa and Latin America, and when I've worked up the nerve to ask them about it, every one of them said, "nobody liked it, but we just got on with our lives because we didn't want trouble." Despite all the gun hoarding and posturing about being rebels against tyranny, that has been the attitude of every "average American" to outrageous behavior by our own government as well.

It’s pretty much this. Giant public work projects are basically the only good selling point authoritarianism has and those are still mostly reliant on the government actually organizing and funding those projects. American conservatives seem to forget where they even live considering that America was one the pioneers of cars and oil. Those industries still run deep and have never had a 21st century incentive to encourage governments to build rail systems that would undercut their auto and gas sales.

The Patriot Act is one. But there are countless consumer protection laws that are either revoked or never enforced because of this, too. Enshittification is the end result of letting corporations run roughshod over regulations and the rights of the people.
 
The thing that gets me about Sean Duffy and his reality show road trip, is they could have just put it on the back burner and released it later when maybe gas prices went down.

Like was Trump and his friends thinking this would be a great distraction from the war and everything else due to being so sheltered they don't even think the gas prices should matter to anyone?

It's weird in its own way that they did the project to begin with, but the timing is plain bizarre to start chattering away about it while it gets more expensive for people to travel.

Nah, they disliked vaccines even before Biden. One of the only times Trumps straight up got booed at a rally was when he was talking about how beautiful and wonderful the vaccine he made with his own two hands was.

Massie demanded the release of the Epstein files and that forced the Trump administration release heavily, hastily redacted files that they didn't want to release at all. So yes, they are mad at him for making Trump fulfill a campaign promise.
