Gerrymandering is legal. What's different now is Democrats don't get free seats in the House (specifically in the South) by carving out black voting districts where they are a minority. What's not being talked about is Hispanics are picking up seats from black minority areas as well.
The dems have been gerrymandering without limit and the VRA rule about minority majority districts forced red states to gerrymander for them (black votes = dem votes). This explosion of red states redistricting is just the dems chickens coming home to roost.

Unironically. For the Republicans to gerrymandering all they need to do is put city voters and rural voters into their own districts which creates clean, orderly, and fair looking maps. When the dems gerrymander they need to dilute rural votes with urban ones so they create these absolute clusterfuck maps where their major cities literally have tendrils coming out of them to swallow up smaller communities.
