For rack grade M1s I think you're right. An M1 in 9.3x62, .35 Whelen, .458 win mag, or 6.5 creedmoor would be significantly more valuable.

The M1 Carbine is arguably worse. It was and still sometimes is priced higher than the Garand despite there being more of them.
