AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Authorities say three people were killed and 14 others were wounded after a shooting at a bar in Austin, Texas.

Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis said at a press conference early Sunday that police received a call for reports of a “male shooting” at Buford’s, a popular beer garden in the city’s entertainment district.

When police arrived at the scene, they confronted a man with a gun and then “returned fire, killing the suspect,” Davis said.

EMS Chief Robert Luckritz said three people were found dead at the scene and 14 people were injured and transported to hospitals. Of those injured, three were in critical condition.

“We received a call at 1:39 a.m. and within 57 seconds, the first paramedics and officers were on scene actively treating the patients,” Luckritz said.

Austin Mayor Kirk Watson praised the rapid response by police and rescuers.

“They definitely saved lives,” Watson said.

It's almost like crime and violence that's endemic to cities has more than just "guns" as the common denominator..... but we can't talk about that.
 
The killer, who is a US citizen from Senegal, had a Quran in his car and clothing described as Islamic garb when he opened fire on Buford’s Backyard Beer Garden near the University of Texas-Austin campus, according to sources familiar with the investigation.

I agree he was doing exactly that, but what a bizarre choice of venue for a mass shooting.

There's an absolute mass of people on East 6th (Dirty 6th), the area where you get all the street brawl videos. Instead of going where the massive crowd is, he goes to a much quieter bar way out West 6th, away from the main crowd? My only guess is he thought there'd be less police so he could go on a longer rampage before getting domed.

What he didn't think about is that the cops hang out en masse few blocks up (Lamar and 6th or close to it) to pick up drunk drivers headed out to the highway. They may have even heard the shots. No surprise they got there fast af.

i watched without audio but it’s just chilling seeing that first (presuming civilian based on clothing) girl doing cpr on that person, both in bar-clothing. just envisioning a bar night with friends ending up like that. heart goes out to those affected. horrifying.
 
57 seconds is no time at all, but niggers tend to shoot their load and then scamper immediately. The fact that the guy stuck around and tried to shoot it out with the cops makes me think it's a lunatic thing rather than nig beef.

I live near there; all the noise woke me up. I wasn't surprised that there was violence on 6th, it's really crazy there every weekend. Thousands of college students and tourists, it's a concert-level crowd. I am surprised it was a terrorist though, I always figured if something popped off it would be some drunk retards having an argument or some cartel members running a drive-by.

The place is flooded with cops all the time. Buford's is a 2-3 minute walk from the main drag where the biggest bars are and the cops are stationed, so the response time is probably just how long it took them to run over. I haven't interacted directly with the Austin police but they look decently impressive, lots of super fit Texas Rangers on horseback and muscled-up tattooed dudes that spend all day corralling hobos. The terrorist probably hit Buford's rather than the main strip because he didn't want to get out of his car.

People online have been talking about it being dumb to stay out at one of these bars until 2 am, but the way it works downtown is that the 2am shut down cuts the party off right in the middle. Places stay crowded until the last minute, and then everyone gets dumped out onto the sidewalk at once. There are some night clubs that run until 4, sort of out of the way places, but they're more rave-y.

The place was relatively quiet this morning. I didn't rubberneck at the crime scene itself, but I went out for breakfast and 6th was full of tourists but had way fewer hobos and street people than usual; maybe the cops swept them all out to keep things under control.

I had actually been out drinking that evening, but I'm too old for 6th street so I was in East Austin and was home before midnight. Still, it's a little spooky.
