Modern developers coping over their shit code will always baffle me.
I'm an intermediate coder, AT BEST, so I try to listen way more than I talk on the subject. I have had nothing of value to add to the coding conversation.
So what do I do?
I keep my fucking mouth shut.
Sure I've made a few shit games.
I even took several CS classes in and out of college.
But GOD FORBID I have the confidence to speak on literally ANY of the topics that come up in this thread.
I'm shit at it because I haven't put the time and effort in that others clearly have.
I just wish more of the "coding community" had this frame of mind and shut the fuck up about shit they know nothing about. Kind of basic, but I guess it needs to be said when dealing with an entire industry of fucking speds.

Not a single release to his name either lmao
I've never followed the guy (the only thing I remember seeing was a write-up on IMGUI, which is probably like 15 years old at this point), but I'm reasonably sure he's an actual programmer, unlike Mald, so there's that. However, it's very interesting how his make-game-on-stream project is 11+ years old:

And it's still not finished, somehow (and probably won't be):

Is he just a more competent proto-Mald?

LOL I searched it and found this. It looks like ass man

If you guys want to see it go here. Looks like he abandonded it 4-5 years ago

A kid could probably make a better game

Jason has confirmed that he won't be in OnlyFangs for TBC Hardcore, and the chatter who brought that up made his janny senses tingle.
I think he made up the ferret software thing to pretend the ban isn't for asking the question, he's clearly seething. Insane behavior!

He somehow doubts that people will actually give a shit about the upcoming heartbound update and was about to drop a truthbomb, but decided it was better to leave it unsaid.
It's obvious he's just lowering expectations before the long awaited Animus release. It will drop any hour from now, 100%

Still no Heartbound update, so it will probably be the New Year in most of the world before it drops, again :)
Happy New Year!

A clueless developer asked Mald what he is working on, forcing him to embarrass himself by reminding everyone of the games he made. He seems a bit uncomfortable in this clip, moving erratically, stuttering and laughing awkwardly. He avoids discussing the details of his magnum opus, Heartbound, and doesn't show its Steam page, despite having steam opened on screen, as if he knows it's shit. He also omits the fact that blockgame is just a Minecraft server. The only things he seems proud of are his ferret rape dungeon and his past in the AAA
That was literally the most embarrassing shit to watch. I can't believe he immediately resorted to bullshitting this guy 5 seconds after meeting him, what a faggot.

Nope. Pretty sure Casey is a real (and pretty competent) programmer: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casey_Muratori
From around 2012[15] to 2016,[16] Muratori worked on Jonathan Blow's video game The Witness, where he rewrote the movement system (in particular, working on collision detection systems)[4] and helped to extend the world editor.[17] He documented his development progress in a series called Witness Wednesdays.[18]
He worked on Jon Blow's Braid and The Witness.

While I learned C the traditional way (college + K&R book), I've been told by many devs that his Handmade Hero series (the "game" you see above) is great for learning low level programming. Never watched any of his videos personally but I've heard he (akin to Blow) shits on modern (web) dev all the time so he's good in my book.

Pretty retarded to defend Mald without having any context though. Looking at the YouTube comments, it appears that ThePrimeagen tried to cut and hide that part of the episode behind Spotify to avoid any mentions of Mald in the comments but people found out anyway and shat on him for going Spotify exclusive.

Edit: Yeah, Handmade Hero is more of a giant tutorial and not really a game:
Everything, from the basic game engine, to the rendering and audio, to the high-level game systems themselves, will be coded from scratch, and filmed while he's doing it. Muratori hosts a regular Twitch stream (weekdays, 8pm PST) of his work, explaining what he's doing as he's doing it, as well as putting the whole thing up on YouTube.

Goddamn, that was painful to watch. Even assuming that the point was something along the lines of "every codebase has some shit buried in it, sometimes for good reason, so nitpicking is cringe, etc., etc." (which is true), Shartbound isn't a good example of that, especially the legendary "storyline_array" of all things, holy shit. The "sometimes people are just very-very good at doing code the way they do it, and if they get the results, that's fine, don't you know" conclusion is pretty funny. It'd probably be better if they weren't so smug about it though, and maybe grew some balls and actually named the "participants" directly, instead of doing the gay "some youtuber" shit.

EDIT: Local archive of the relevant bit (probably could be cut down to like 10-15 minutes, but whatever):
MaldMuratori-30fps.mp4
He's probably right in a general sense, but we're not talking about coding in theory here, the actual result of shartbound after a decade of development speaks for itself. You could overlook messy code if someone actually delivers functional software. Also nobody would have looked in MALD's direction if he wasn't LARPing as a programming guru.

He could received 1/10th magnitude of the flak what he got, if he had the mental faculty to say "my bad" in WoW... And he could had the chance to maintain the facade as a programming guru...

I have a hunch w that stunt called indiecember he tried to soft rebrand himself as a "game designer guru" instead.

It's honestly fascinating to me, just how bad Malds loss of followers is. Sure the individual daily amount is pretty small compared to when the drama originally happened, but it's insanely consistent. Without fail, every time he streams, he looses about 500 to 600 followers. And this for months now! If this persists he will end 2026 with less than 750k.

(I'm sure though that when Animus drops everyone will come crawling back to him)

I mean in terms of having his code looked at, bragging about being a 1337 EX-BLIZZARD HACKER WHO WORKED FOR THE GOVERNMENT WITH 20 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE is why people felt the need to nitpick his code. The guys who reviewed MALD's code sound a lot less petty with that context in mind.

The whole thing kinda reminded me of how Mald initially aggro'd on SKG, it's really bizarre. Almost makes me think the guy just got buttmad at someone calling his code "trash", leading to the whole "lol I laugh at code reviews" bit. But regardless, defending Mald's code (with a "if it gets results, it doesn't matter how shit it is", no less) is not a good look. And I get that the guy has good reputation, but this, along with the fact that his game studio (apparently founded in 2004) somehow didn't release any games, doesn't inspire confidence.

Is he just a more competent proto-Mald?
he knows his c++ (of the time) and some CS concepts, from what I have seen in the rare ocassions I have watched some of his content.
he is a lolcow, for sure, and has a very abrassive personality, this is why his programming series has comments off and was a shitshow while the comments were ON.
he sperged about git not being good with his textures (git's primary target is text, git can't do proper diff on binary files) and he also has this retarded idea that cmake is bad (it is) and you'd rather have your own build scripts (you shouldn't) so this makes me assume that his is partly uneducated on the subject that he tries to "teach" people.
(I can elaborate on both of the above, but his takes are so retarded that I don't find the urge to type an essay about how obviously retarded he is on those things)

I only bothered to reply due to "proto-mald" . Now that I think about it, he used his programming series to enter the youtube/twitch/entertainment segment and once he got in (took him almost 10 years) and his name was recognizable in that sector of YT, he dropped his series and fucked off to be a panelist in a podcast (?).

aside from his wage-cucking jobs his own work has gems such as
- Muratori decided not to release the game
- the book was never published
- has not been released
(excerps from his wikipedia page)
he even tried to grift with his own conference, handmadeconf, and you can find all the conference years (all both of them) on youtube.
if you take a deep dive into his career he struggles to be something like mald, give talks, sell books, organize conferences, boss people around. These are his goals, programming is the medium which these goal can be achieved.
I am convinced that he is more happy with his career as a panelist to primagen, rather than trying for 10 years to build and optimize an ECS in 2-hour sessions.
I don't think that he has evolved much as a developer after his wage-cucking jobs were he was forced to work for a living, compared to know where he has to entertain people for a living.

jo blo is also in this category, tsoding is also in this category. primagen is also in this category. these are programming entertainers, not programmers.
I don't know if I am good at my job or not, but after 20 years into low level systems programming and digital design on FPGAs (C, Verilog) I still see people at the age of muratori or joblo with jaw-dropping skills and the ability to dive into anything and fix it and I feel retarded compared to them.
I don't get that feeling from these guys who are so praised by their communities.

sub numbers go up, but as you said, actual numbers go down and things get more pathetic month after month.
1767199285033.png

I posted a screenshot 1 month ago and sperged a bit when somehow he found a few thousand organic new subs (not gifted) and 866 of them are "Undefined" in the twitch tracker.
What's amazing is that we are on the last day of the month and he has
plese take a sit for this.
673 T1, 19 T2 and 24 T3 subs and the 400 to 500 people who come in with prime subs. That's it guys.
where the fuck are the usual 3000 to 5000 organic subscribers?

and for the record he is being bankrolled by a few whales. 84.7%, 7679 of 9065, of december's subs (30 out of 31 days) are gifted.

This tbh. But people like those types of uber confident one true solution guys. (See our thread protagonist)

Funny thing his handmade series is pretty much great showcase of why reinventing everything from scratch is kinda waste of time.
Just like he says, game engines/frameworks solve easy problems. But he forgot to mention those problems are tedious, and his way of solving them isn't even portable.

So he wastes time on easy things, instead of doing hard times. Very maldy/yandere core ngl.
They are both stuck in expert beginner mindset. Obviously maldy being much worse at programming, but still.

to this day i really have to wonder (although the easy answer is, hubristic retardation) why he decided to go the route of re-using his furry OC name on new bits of content like AoC, if i had that kind of baggage attached to it id re-start everything from scratch, Piratesoftware was already a SEO friendly name that was pretty generic

Searching Maldavius alone brings up his decades old EVE profile, and slop articles automatically fill in "Figtree" which directly links to his fursona and second life avatar, i guess re-using usernames is not haram for the fake cybersecurity expert
