Well didn't she also reject being called tanned? If her lore reflects her actual background at all then that just leaves her "human" parent being dark skinned. Do note that there are other dark skins besides black that the Japanese can look down on(though anything besides SEA is kinda unlikely).

there's a lot going on and it'll take several rewatches to spot all the references (I don't think I paid enough attention to spot them, I was half looking at chat)

She was never a "dark" elf - just a regular elf.
But people's perception of regular elves has been standardized by DnD and Warcraft (who made sure to distinguish Regular Elves and Dark Elves by their skin colors).

I can understand the frustration in being called "dark" or "dark skinned" when technically most Asians are brown

Maybe she’s from Okinawa, some Japanese from Okinawa had dark complexion genetically.
 
It was already posted a few pages back, but here's the original version of the lyric video of Calli's song (now unlisted because the new version's out). Interesting to see what transitions and shots were adapted to match the art style of the official version, and which ones were changed completely. The original version is exactly one minute shorter.
 
Unrelated but the US have now beat Mexico in both finals this summer and with its B team no less.
