Restaurant tests out pizza topped with cicadas​

(CNN)Those aren't olives...

An Ohio restaurant seems to have found a use for the Brood X cicadas pestering parts of the Midwest. The Pizza Bandit in Dayton tested out a Spicy Thai Cicada Pie.

Yes, that's a pizza with cicadas on it.

Before you get too excited -- or repulsed -- know that the restaurant is not selling cicada-topped pizzas. In a Facebook post showing off the new creation, the business noted, "We're not even sure if we legally can sell you locally foraged Cicadas."


The restaurant did livestream a tasting panel trying out the pizza, which also featured miso hoisin sriracha sauce, mozzarella, provolone, mushrooms, cabbage, green onion, mango, cilantro and a spicy Thai sauce.

"Opinions of the pizza range from absolutely delicious to...well...uh...yeah...," the Facebook post said.

While cicadas are not toxic, the US Food and Drug Administration has warned people not to eat the insects if they are allergic to seafood. "These insects share a family relation to shrimp and lobsters," the FDA said.

I'm actually surprised it's out of Dayton, Columbus is usually where the Hipsters crying for relevance are. I'm actually shocked there's a hipster enough Pizza place in Dayton to do this, it's usually all murder and opioid overdoses.
 
It's an evil plot to provide plausible deniability when people find flies in their food.

How the hell is this different than putting shrimp on a pizza? Either way, don't do it.
 
I don't give two fucks about this journalist shill advocating for this astroturfed movement to Eat the Bugs™, those thing look downright unappetizing on a pizza.
 
Disgusting. They need to give up on eating the bugs, no one wants this.

That was really quick from the 'Did you know you can eat cicadas?' articles to this.
 
Notice how they aren't just offering buckets of these creatures to eat: the only way they can slowly get everyone to eat bugs is by sprinkling them on preexisting foods like pizza and sandwiches. In order to get people to try these things first, they need to slowly normalize them as just simple toppings like anchovies or olives for normal foods that contain meat or cheese. Because, you know, just shoveling cicadas and crickets into your mouth on TV would just make you look like a savage lunatic.
 
Ain’t gonna happen, chief. I’ll go vegetarian before I eat bugs. Hell, I’ll go vegan before I eat bugs. For God’s sake have a little dignity and pride in yourselves
