Phil and Lil’s mum Betty will be openly gay in theRugrats reboot series, becoming a “beacon for young queer people”.

Betty has been a low-key queer icon for ages because of her unashamed love for sports, boisterous attitude and her trademark purple shirt with the symbol for “female” on it.

Natalie Morales, who came out as queer in 2017, is the voice actor playing Betty in the upcoming Rugrats reboot.

The Parks and Recreation star told The AV Clubthat fans of the original show “may have had an inkling Betty was a member of the alphabet mafia”.

Morales added that Betty holds a lot of power and influence for young queer people looking for examples of “living your life happily and healthily”.

“Betty is a single mum with her own business who has twins and still has time to hand out with her friends and her community, and I think it’s just so great because examples of living your life happily and healthily as an out queer person is just such a beacon for young queer people who may not have examples of that,” she said.

“And yeah, Betty is a fictional cartoon, but even cartoons were hugely influential for me as a kid and if I’d been watching Rugrats and seen Better casually talking about her ex-girlfriend, I think at least a part of me would have felt like things might be okay in the future.”

The AV Club reported that in the Rugrats reboot, Betty owns a cafe called Betty’s Beans, loves football and cracks jokes about her ex-girlfriends while parenting twins Phil and Lil.

In the original Rugrats, Betty was the tough and outspoken wife of Howard DeVille. It’s unclear if the reboot will address their relationship.

Betty was originally played by Kath Soucie, who also voiced Phil and Lil.

The Rugrats revival series premieres on 27 May on streaming service Paramount Plus.

I knew nothing about this reboot and the first thing popping up is that "mother of twins is gay now". What's up with all this gay glorification and hype train of rainbow?

The same thing with Eternals, Sandman, Last of us 2 and many others. And it's harder and harder to remember when heterosexuals and their relationships were hyped like that.
 
Really? Phil's and Lil's mom? Really? If you are going to virtue signal go all the way, the lesbian should be Susie's mom. She is black, she is a French chef, airline pilot and doctor and Susie's is boringly perfect child.

The irony is the original show presented that couple acting against gender stereotypes. It showed a range of masculinity/femininity in the parents, instead of suggesting all parents should act the same way.

Funny how all it takes to be a "queer icon" is acting a bit different than normal men/women. Almost as if there's something abnormal about being queer.
 
If Tommy and Chuckie aren’t having on screen anal sex by the end of the first episode, they’ve failed the queer community.
 
So Howard's been sent to the cuck shed permanently. Honestly, I hope he got out of that violent, abusive relationship safely instead of her putting him in his grave.

It's probably because of all the "anti-Semitism" recently. The execs realized they need another way to push Jewish culture down kids' throats.

Can't wait for the Holocaust episode. They did have a Passover episode in the original.

If we're going to look too deeply into a fucking children's cartoon, having a straight butch mom with a husband is a lot more of an interesting dynamic than flanderizing her into a queer single mom. You've taken something multi-dimensional and whittled it down to a stereotypical appearance.
 
My parents wouldn't let me watch this because because they didn't want me speaking baby-talk past 7. Same with Cow & Chicken; they thought it would make me retarded (or at least, more retarded than I am now).

And they were probably right. Thanks, mom and dad, I know you truly love me.

Goddamnit, we had a series in the works focusing on Susie around the time of all grown up but instead we get this? I thought that would’ve been more appealing to people since the main characters are black but no, tampering with shit they shouldn’t.
