Phil and Lil’s mum Betty will be openly gay in theRugrats reboot series, becoming a “beacon for young queer people”.

Betty has been a low-key queer icon for ages because of her unashamed love for sports, boisterous attitude and her trademark purple shirt with the symbol for “female” on it.

Natalie Morales, who came out as queer in 2017, is the voice actor playing Betty in the upcoming Rugrats reboot.

The Parks and Recreation star told The AV Clubthat fans of the original show “may have had an inkling Betty was a member of the alphabet mafia”.

Morales added that Betty holds a lot of power and influence for young queer people looking for examples of “living your life happily and healthily”.

“Betty is a single mum with her own business who has twins and still has time to hand out with her friends and her community, and I think it’s just so great because examples of living your life happily and healthily as an out queer person is just such a beacon for young queer people who may not have examples of that,” she said.

“And yeah, Betty is a fictional cartoon, but even cartoons were hugely influential for me as a kid and if I’d been watching Rugrats and seen Better casually talking about her ex-girlfriend, I think at least a part of me would have felt like things might be okay in the future.”

The AV Club reported that in the Rugrats reboot, Betty owns a cafe called Betty’s Beans, loves football and cracks jokes about her ex-girlfriends while parenting twins Phil and Lil.

In the original Rugrats, Betty was the tough and outspoken wife of Howard DeVille. It’s unclear if the reboot will address their relationship.

Betty was originally played by Kath Soucie, who also voiced Phil and Lil.

The Rugrats revival series premieres on 27 May on streaming service Paramount Plus.

"Women who like sports must be gay" - Man 1950's/Intersectional feminist 2021.

Weird world, weird world.
'Women who like sports, wear purple, are loud and have a shitty attitude must be gay'

For people who claim to hate being stereotyped they sure make a point of confirming stereotypes as accurate

If she was a low-key lesbo (we all knew it, even as kids) then why make a song and dance over it?

Rugrats hay-day was 20 years ago, get with the times, you square

Yeah because when kids think of Rugrats they totally think of a fat middle-aged sports mom eating tacos and not the funny-looking babies. What a whackadoo.

... Okay, it's still woke pandering, but not as bad as I feared.
They tore apart a family so the nu-lesbo could be a walking talking negative stereotype. It's still pretty bad.

I mean, it's a fucking fictional family in a reboot of a fictional series. I don't have to like it, but "tore apart a family" seems unnecessarily emotionally invested in it.

If she's a dyke how does she have children?
Also, if they want to be realistic with lesbians taking care of babies, Phil and Lil can't make it pass the age of 5, considering how lesbos often physically and mentally abuse children left in their care.

1) Why....?
2) Another freaking reboot/remake of a 90s IP? Really?
3) Who even wants this (not just this ridiculous change but a reboot/remake of this show)?
4) Why are the executives of these studios easily convinced into funding and producing these terrible reboots/remakes especially with such god awful changes? Are they really not aware of how bad a track record other studios have had with reboots/remakes?

I mean, yeah I want these people and the rest of the entertainment industry in the West to pretty much go under, but holy crap. How do these people (or at least those in charge) not have any clue what people want these days?

Most parents won’t even know about the change and plop their toddler down in front of the show, leave them alone and just let it play alongside Spiderman impregnating Elsa.

I guess I don't really care? It's not like Howard was an interesting character. I do think confirming the stereotypes is kind of dumb, but I also don't care enough to be angry about it.

But do they realize that all the parents on the rugrats were pretty dysfunctional? Just curious. Just want to make sure that the lesbian mom is going to still be abrasive and self absorbed.
