Between the two extremes of the recent mask debates—continuing to wear a mask after being fully vaccinated is good, because it signals that we care about other people; wearing a mask is bad, because public health experts have said it’s no longer necessary outdoors and we should follow science—lies a vast middle ground, which I would venture most of us occupy.

People have all sorts of complex reasons for wearing or not wearing a mask post-vaccination, ranging from from the medical to the practical to the mundane. (I still have a couple of weeks until I’m fully protected against the virus, but I’ve been thinking about how useful a mask is for covering up an unfortunate zit.) Some women have told the Guardian that they are loath to give up theirs because it helps deflect the male gaze.

“I don’t want to feel the pressure of smiling at people to make sure everyone knows I’m ‘friendly’ and ‘likable’,” a 44-year-old woman named Aimee told the outlet, calling her mask a symbol of “emotional freedom.”

“It’s almost like taking away the male gaze,” she continued. “There’s freedom in taking that power back.”

Another woman, 25-year-old Becca Marshalla, said wearing a mask similarly relieves her of having to perform emotional labor (actual emotional labor!) at the Chicago bookstore where she works. “Oftentimes when a customer is being rude or saying off-color political things, I’m not allowed to grimace or ‘make a face’ because that will set them off,” she said. “With a mask, I don’t have to smile at them or worry about keeping a neutral face. I have had customers get very upset when I don’t smile at them.”

G/O Media may get a commission
Marshalla said she and her coworkers also appreciate the masks for the anonymity they offer them on and off the job: She told the Guardian that aggressive anti-maskers are common at the bookstore, and she’d rather them not recognize her when she’s walking around the city. Other people told the outlet that the masks help with: feeling safer amid the wave of anti-Asian violence; being misgendered in public; and dealing with their body dysmorphia.

“Simply put,” one woman said, “I’m sick of being perceived.”

I’ll probably stop wearing my mask outside once I’m fully inoculated and it becomes too hot to be comfortable. But I’ll continue to carry it on me: It’s always great to have an extra line of defense against being perceived.

If the hardest part of your job is being pleasant and attentive to customers you have an easy job.
Again, like I said, it's professionalism.

Management would LOVE it if every employee in service was a chipper and bright as those forever-smiling people that used to show up in old cigarette ads. But, even the most slavish store manager knows (unlike corporate) that people have limits and is never going to enforce such (and last the ensuing mutiny).

Generally, workers and customers find a happy medium where as long as both sides complete the transaction efficiently and hit all the major options (bag? receipt? change? any questions? Okay thanks) we're both happy with the outcome.

Ironically, those like the OP who bitch about not owing anyone their fee-fees are the FIRST to go full-Karen when an employee forgets to wish them a happy day.... like all hardcore neo-progs, they project, project and then project some more. They're upset at the world for its exploitive nature on the surface, feigning righteous outrage, but, dig even one molecule deeper and you find they're REALLY upset that they aren't in CHARGE of who gets to exploit whom and on what terms and coming up with excuses to be assholes (you did it FIRST!) is all they can do to claw even a bit of power up into their worthless lives.

the "pressure" of smiling at people :story:
really boggles my mind how people like this can live to age 46 without ever figuring out how to get a grip on their neurotic and dysfunctional thought process

But see, the implication that she hasn't had to do that is an indication she's of high value. "I am as fragile as china and I'm still taken care of" is the message being broadcast to the rest of the world.

I really do think a lot of this childish behavior is not just virtue signaling but value/class signaling.

That's fair, considering I want to keep wearing the mask to stick it to the surveillance state.

That being said, I'm usually staring at your tits and ass due to your tight fitting clothes and not your overly made up face so maybe you should be focusing on other articles of clothing.

I wonder if this is a regional thing or an effect of "living in a major city". I dont think Ive ever had an employee smile at me, or really even thought to expect it, mostly you just get the "politely kind tone of voice" (the one people use in the church lobby after the service, when yorue there with grandma on Easter and you accidentally make eye contact with grandmas 2nd cousin or whatever and she comes over to ask how youve been and talk about how she remembers you being thiiiis big).

Maybe Im just autistic and dont look people in the eyes or notice or something, I think the only time its happened to me was at those old boomer-type restaurants and it usually comes across as so insincere that's when I notice it more. Hell my grandma was one of the hardcore "keep up with the Joneses" greatest generation types who did everything "right", she would be business-friendly with people she hired or dealt with but I dont think even she ever expected that.

you know, when i hear people talk about the pressures of retail work
it's pretty much just "customer is a retard"
never heard one of "fake smile too hard"
i mean, i fucking hate doing it too.. but it's not hard
it's not enough to wear someone out

These idiots should try hauling beams or bricks all day, but those are jobs for the poors (even though they pay better than some shitty service position, even service managers make fuck all) so they won't be going near those. I've had a few service jobs and faking a smile was the easiest part of the day.

physical work and putting up with other people being dumb is demanding
pretending to care isn't even a job thing
it's just what you do out and about

the writer of this article needs to touch grass or something damn

It would me nice if that was true but i still get honked at or catcalled mask or no mask

I just hiss at or flip them off
Assuming your not trolling you should really at least try and make this shit realistic. Even the most beautiful people in the word don't have guys catcalling/honking/groping them 100+ times every time they leave the house.

I don't even see shit this delusional on r/misandry or r/femaledatingstrategy

It's not every time I live the house but it's usually at least a couple times a month. Enough to be annoying.
No, you don't.
Wish that was true

When it comes to the male gaze you just can't win no matter which way you go lmao
