You can't retry without cause for a crime, but in many cases doing multiple trials is a waste of time and money, so more than one charge may need to be brought. For this reason, sentences can be concurrent or consecutive; these would be concurrent, as they are addressing the same crime, or the longest sentence will be taken into consideration when picking a final duration.
Edit: This meaning, if you have a crime with a long duration but ability to parole, and concurrent shorter sentences that don't, you'd have to wait out the shorter ones before applying- it's not like they stop existing entirely. Or so I understand it, could very well be wrong here. This part is a kind of niche legal topic I have no personal experience with and IANAL.

Other cases where this might happen include a premeditated murder where someone is killed on accident amidst the murder, perhaps because the person fell when grabbed, hit the floor, and had a lethal concussion.
The murderer could be argued to be guilty of the premeditated murder despite the concussion being accidental and killing them midway- a jury might disagree- you bring both charges to trial to see which charge, if any, will stick, allowing the jury to argue both ideas out.
