I can only speak for what i've heard, but today the process is very streamlined and unless you make it big in the amateur scene you probably will not get an offer from a publisher.

Most of the time, the guy goes to a casting where he will get a physical examination (He has no butterface, decently fit and good size) and if he passes he will get called to make a scene as a test ride.

Also, another thing i've read a lot of times is that most male porn actors end up being gay for pay because male actors usually don't get paid as well as females and doing gay pays quite well. Same with doing trannies.
