In that arc he justifies murdering people because "Well if they'd stop panicking about how they're dying, then they can use healing magic to avoid dying! It's not my fault they bled to death after I chopped their hands off!"

I'm not sure how fucked up you were thinking, but he's like... He chooses to present himself to other characters as a bad guy, but he's the protagonist Gary Stu so he's presented to the readers as a good guy, but he really is a bad guy afterall (just not for the reasons he says). Even if he's not as fucked up as you think, you're right that he's a deceptive snake.
