If you're doing hardcore porn in that style, you're wasting your time.
I still think there's a market for softcore in that style but you'd have to sell it in just the right way. IIRC, Adam & Eve and a few other big companies still make the "hardcore but with a story" style pornos but with the explicit intent of doing softcore edits of them for stuff like Showtime and hotel PPV's while selling the hardcore scenes by themselves elsewhere.
The best way to do softcore in this day and age and actually make it sell is to lean in on the B-Movie or parody angles. Think something in the style of Flesh Gordon or the Misty Mundane spoofs from the early 2000's. Most of Skinemax's later output in the 2000's and 2010's was that type of stuff and it was surprisingly profitable in spite of the recession and internet hardcore fare (mainly because the movies were dirt cheap to make) and they largely died out due to both the director of late night programming at HBO/Cinemax retiring AND the AT&T buyout of Warner that was happening around the same time.
With Pornhub doing their purges and the payment processors and Woke Left being more prudish and vindictive than ever, there's sort of a window of opportunity that simply wasn't there when Hot Girls Wanted was made.
If you want to sell porn to people who don't want to waste money on OnlyFans or whatever but still avoid the wrath of MasterCard, then doing softcore comedies, parodies, and B-movies on a very low budget is a potential idea if you can find just the right way to pull it off.

See, I think you can still do the "porn with plot" even in the 2020's but you can't market it like it's porn.
You market it like it's a TV-MA/Hard R/NC-17 rated movie with sex and nudity as part of the implied appeal and you keep the budget just low enough that you'll make some kind of a profit no matter what.
Softcore's the best route for this, but you could probably even do some subtle hardcore (sort of like those awful 2000's arthouse flicks with unsimulated sex) as well, depending on what kind of movie you're trying to make.
If you're going for the pseudo-arthouse or "soap opera with boobs" route, then you can easily slide in some hardcore scenes among the softcore stuff.
If you're aiming for Corman-tier B-Movie schlock or goofball Misty Mundae-style parodies, just go softcore and have other kinds of gimmicks to doll it up.
Trying to market it on Pornhub or OnlyFans is a bad idea, but selling it on Netflix or some other streaming service with a TV-MA or NC-17 rating can work. Especially since streaming services that aren't first-party fare will be seeking out cheap filler material with some kind of a built-in appeal or gimmick.

That would require more locations and sets to bring things into the real world of sorts. I've said it before about the Meyer movies: at first you think it's just an old low budget movie, then you discover it's softcore porn, then you realize it's some kind of art that you don't really get but there's something going on... All in maybe 9 minutes.

The Misty Mundae movies were pretty great and fun. They were genuinely into it and it was just goofy, silly fun. From what I learned (or at least what was said on the grapevine) she signed on to do those movies to pay off gambling debts. I hope she's living her best life.
