My memory of the 80s-early 90s isn’t the best. I was only a child then, but what I knew about the AIDS epidemic was solely lobbed at gay men in the news. I do recall there being a misconception that a gay man really was a man with a feminine brain or something like that, and I’m old enough to remember that there was a pushback on that. The idea that a gay man was a man, that an effeminate gay man was a man and that an effeminate straight man was a man is very clear in my mind and really my first clear memory of the movement. It seems foreign that trans folks would try to insert themselves so heavily when they spent so much time saying that they were men. I also don’t buy the “they couldn’t come out” narrative. Being a gay man then, it was shit. Real shit. I can’t imagine that someone claiming to be a woman would have been treated much worse but what do I know? Jesus. They tried this with the FX series Pose a year or two ago, rewriting the history of ACT UP and making their activism a troon-led phenomenon, I kid you not. (For an actual good show that accurately covers the early AIDS crisis in NYC, try The Deuce season 3).

Trans people were never on the frontlines of anything significant back then. Even loud mouthed self aggrandizers like Sylvia Rivera saw their little organizations collapse due to incompetence and infighting. The troons within the gay community were largely at odds with the rest of the LGB (here’s one example from the 1990s)

It’s been said before but one of the reason that modern gay history is so susceptible to bullshit rewrites is in part due to all of the gay men no longer here to relate their stories and knowledge.
