There's also the fact that had they openly supported him they would've been accused of being pawns and it would've fueled a media narrative that would justify "rebalancing the courts" because of muh eebil Rethuglican bigots.

The problem with SCOTUS is that has and always will be a place where political decisions are made while pretending that they're entirely apolitical. As an institution it is way too powerful for its own good.

couldn't the republican governors and legislations simply declare the winner of elections to be the candidate who wins the higer number of counties in a state, contrary to the popular vote?

To be fair, I don't think many want an actual civil war, at least those aren't war mongering loonies, the problem is as you mention in your last paragraph people will become desperate depending on what actions are taken, and it might be inevitable at this point. Not yet though it has to get far worse before people will go off the wagon or full out.

Personally I think it could have been avoided, but now I have little faith.

Not even just killing. Imagine sitting in a trench for months on end, in shitty muddy dirty conditions, eating shit rations, trying to do everything you can to not go insane from boredom. Then suddenly a mortar smacks into your trench or you have to charge a enemy territory or they charge you, and suddenly your shitting yourself as you have to fight to survive as your friends die screaming around you. That's a big reason a lot of soldiers get PTSD, not just from killing, but the sheer insanity and hellish conditions of wars.
And I don't think people truly want a war, just that they think it's the only option left.

War is a part of who we are. It shapes us it molds us. Its the ultimate form of competition. Its what makes civilizations and breaks civilizations. The horror and the attrocities mold into strength, the victories into traditions and celebrations, into something to feel proud about and people to honor, the losses into mourning and a stark reminder on what to avoid in the future. War and conflict will forever be a part of civilization.

No, it means everything is back to where it was three days ago, before everyone thought the existence of the universe depended completely on the SCOTUS' ruling on the Hail Mary pass from Texas. People have the memory of a fucking goldfish so they lost track of absolutely everything else that was happening and threw every single chip they could find on this case that cropped up completely out of the clear blue, and that's precisely why I'm so sick of everyone ripping their hair out.

Several other things were happening, several other paths are laid out, several other options are still available, and yet everyone locked their eyes on this brand new case and packed every ounce of faith in it even though it was arguably one of the least-likely to succeed, even if it was one of the most interesting. If people can quit acting like hyper-emotional, glue-huffing window-lickers for five seconds, maybe they can remember what was happening three fucking days ago.

War is the continuation of politics by other means. Bismarck stated that but it's really an observation that war is the cudgel of politics as in German it's implied war is an extension of politics, not the replacement. Der Krieg ist eine blosse Fortsetzung der Politik mit anderen Mitteln is more nuanced. Anyone calling for war is exercising a extreme method which has extreme consequences.
