One should never underestimate the damage plants can do to structures, no matter what they're made of. I still remember when I was a kid and we planted two young trees in the yard, and they happened to be right above the septic tank. We thought it was weird how they seemed to double in size so quickly until we found out their roots broke into the septic tank.

Trees just love it when they can break into sewage/septic lines. Every messed up residential clay sewer line I've replaced has been rife with tightly packed roots that seem to revel in the nutrients and hydration human excrement provides.

My understanding of the dams construction is that it's made of blocks of pre-cast concrete that have been stacked and grouted. The dumb shits couldn't even tie it into bedrock which probably explains the current deflection of at least 50cm (some say 1m or more now). The shitty rock foundation beneath and beside the dam has also been injection grouted with questionable success. It's like a big lego set sitting on a broken ceramic plate that's been glued back together. Some reports are that the dam operators have found evidence of high pressure water intrusion into the grouting, in some cases turning it into "Swiss cheese". I'm not sure if they're talking about the grout in the superstructure or in the foundation... could be both. Of course this can't be verified, but if plants can take root than high pressure water would have no problems fucking up that commie dam.

Perhaps some weeds and grasses can do the job of a bouncing dam busting barrel bomb. Could be karma for all those mysterious chink seeds that keep being shipped around the world.

I once read that the Chinese view their country going through circles. One power will rise and at one Point will fall for the next power to rise again. It's in their history basically. Think about it the first Emperor united China then it fell apart again then some new power came in and so on and so on. For years we have seen China on the rise in regards to international influence and economic power. Now it seems as if the peak was reached and the fall has begun. Or as others stated they have lost the Mandate of Heaven (another aspect of the old Chinese culture) because they couldn't get their act together

All the nitrogen in piss and shit and the bacteria in shit that helpfully tranform into into a more useable form after festering in the tanks a while.

Which brings me to another sory about how Mao fucked up everything he touched.

In 1958's 'Fertlizer Campaign' Mao ordered that peasants were to put fresh, raw, unreated human waste as fertilizer on their vegetables and crops. Before this, 'night soil' was always collected and stored in large ceramic pots or deep pits where it would degrade until tthe worst pathogens were killed and only then used as fertiizer. Mao had the ceramic pots smashed and ordered the fresh waste be put directly onto the fields without being allowed to decompose. Which led, predicably, to a outbreaks of typhoid and cholera as well as parasitic diseases due to the pathogens everyone then consumed in the finished products.

The majority of human waste collected was still being used on the fields as little ago as 2007 from what I've read. They still have an issue with schistosomiasis aka bilharzia in rural areas due to it. It's a parasitic disease most commonly associated with hellhole African countries with untreated water and third world sanitation standards that fucks up your liver, kidneys and other organs permanently.

They were still doing it when I was last there about six years ago. They also burn the fields after harvest which is a fucking nightmare to be around. I loath burning season in the rice paddies with a passion. I'd take the sewage over the smoke; you can wash your veggies but you can't escape the thick dirty smoke.

Yeah, poop needs to be composted to become a safe fertilizer, never dump poop directly on any crop meant for human consumption. Just a tip in case any kiwis decide on doing gardening in the future.
