Greater New York Black Lives Matter president Hawk Newsome joined "The Story" Wednesday to discuss the direction of the movement in the wake of George Floyd's death in police custody and the subsequent demonstrations across the country, many of which have sparked destruction and violence.

"You ... have said that violence is sometimes necessary in these situations," host Martha MacCallum told Newsome. "What exactly is it that you hope to achieve through violence?"

"Wow, it's interesting that you would pose that question like that," Newsome responded, "because this country is built upon violence. What was the American Revolution, what's our diplomacy across the globe?

"We go in and we blow up countries and we replace their leaders with leaders who we like. So for any American to accuse us of being violent is extremely hypocritical."

MacCallum clarified that her question was based off comments she had heard Newsome utter in various interviews.

"I said," Newsome told the host, "if this country doesn't give us what we want, then we will burn down this system and replace it. All right? And I could be speaking ... figuratively. I could be speaking literally. It's a matter of interpretation.

"Let's observe the history of the 1960s, when black people were rioting," he went on. "We had the highest growth in wealth, in property ownership. Think about the last few weeks since we started protesting. There have been eight cops fired across the country."

"I don't condone nor do I condemn rioting," Newsome added. "But I'm just telling you what I observed."

Later in the interview, Newsome insisted the Black Lives Matter movement is about "saving lives" and its adherents should be "applauded" for upholding the Second Amendment.

"Nobody's talking about ambushing police officers. We're talking about protecting lives," he said. "There's nothing more American than that. We talk about uplifting and upholding the Second Amendment but it seems to be the hypocrisy of America that when black people start talking about arming themselves and defending themselves, [that] talk is 'violent'. But when white people grab assault rifles and go to our nation's, their state capitals, it's all good."

The interview took a turn after MacCallum read a quote from Martin Luther King Jr. and asked Newsome if he agreed with it.

"Let us be dissatisfied," King told the Southern Christian Leadership Conference convention in 1967, "until that day when nobody will shout, 'White power!', when nobody will shout, 'Black power!', but everybody will talk about God's power and human power.'"

"I love the Lord and my Lord and savior," Newsome responded to MacCallum's prompt. "Jesus Christ is the most famous black radical revolutionary in history. And he was treated just like Dr. King. He was arrested on occasion and he was also crucified or assassinated. This is what happens to black activists. We are killed by the government."

At the conclusion of the interview, Newsome told MacCallum, "I just want black liberation and black sovereignty, by any means necessary."

Appearing Wednesday on the Fox News Channel’s The Story with host Martha MacCallum, Greater New York Black Lives Matter president Hawk Newsome warned that if the United States “doesn’t give us what we want, then we will burn down this system and replace it.”

A partial transcript is as follows:

MARTHA MACCALLUM: People watch what you say in that video, that you now want to show legislation down people’s throats now that you have everyone’s attention and you’ve also said violence is sometimes necessary in these situations. What exactly is it that you hope to achieve through violence?

HAWK NEWSOME: Wow, it’s interesting that you would pose that question like that because this country is built upon violence. What was the American Revolution, what’s our diplomacy across the globe? We go in and we blow up countries and we replace their leaders with leaders who we like. So for any American to accuse us of being violent is extremely hypocritical.

[…]

MACCALLUM: The only reason why I posed that first question to you the way that I did is I watched you talking on a bunch of different interviews today and you said, “burn it down.” You said, “burn it down, it’s time.” That makes me think you want to burn it down.

HAWK NEWSOME: I said If this country doesn’t give us what we want, then we will burn down the system and replace it. All right? And I could be speaking figuratively, I could be speaking literally. It’s a matter of interpretation. Let’s be very real and let’s observe the history of the 1960s. When black people were rioting, we have their highest growth and wealth, in property ownership. Think about the last few weeks. Since you started protesting there have been eight cops fired across the country. Remember you were telling us that there was Due Process?

That’s why the cop that choked Eric Gardner kept his job and kept receiving raises for five years. Anytime a cop hurt a woman, a child, our elders, there was always a call for due process. But the moment people start destroying property, now cops can be fired automatically. What is this country rewarding? What behavior is it listening to? Obviously not marching. But, when people get aggressive and they escalate their protests, cops get fired, now, you have police officers and Republican politicians talking about police reform. I don’t condone nor do I condemn rioting but I’m just telling what I observed.

Tough talk, but these are the same people who scatter in all directions when a gunshot goes off.

“doesn’t give us what we want, then we will burn down this system and replace it.”

Using threats and acts of violence on non military object/people to achieve political goals....hmmm what is that called again?

Oh right Terrorism. Drone strikes when?

It's only terrorism if the ones doing it have privilege. Killing, raping, and looting is just the voice of the unheard.

He's not entirely wrong though, is he? He may be morally wrong but he's factually correct to point out that violence works. Since these riots started, corporate America has fallen over itself to donate money to BLM, politicians are pandering to their every whim, and the country has become so obsessed with racism that everything from Ancient Aliens to string pulls on garage doors is in danger of being cancelled.

If I was in his shoes I wouldn't condemn the riots either. They're working.

you guys need to stop listening to niggers. After half an hour of "bix nood"s people are trying to figure out some philosophical meaning out of it and how to argue about it. Just don't, you are arguing with yourself.

He said it on video!? Holy fucking optics. Cut it and put it in an ad, Donald.

Also what a disingenuous take on the founding of America and its modern foreign policy. It also sums up perfectly why this aspect of the left has resorted to lying, cheating and breaking things to get what it wants. They are so determined to believe or make believe that their opponents behave this way expressly to justify using these sorts of tactics against everyone else. Throw in some Marxist wordplay (since they are "trained Marxists" after all) and you can even respond to speech with physical violence. But nobody else can. Convenient!

I don't think that riots produce actual violence sufficient to scare corporate America. They are not burning Amazon warehouses, just small businesses mostly, few exceptions of course.

The riots are just a strong wind showing that PC victim culture is trendy and can be capitalized upon for greater profit. If there is a fear, it's only from the scorn of the mob, not physical violence, because like always, objects that are actually valuable are also well protected. Monuments, ghetto shops, windows can all be replaced at tax payers expense, it's only tax dollars.

and the ATF, Secret Service (after all "burning the whole system down" in the way they did surely means implies threats to the President right?), and I bet a whole lot of other agencies too.
I can only hope. If this man gets away with this goofy supervillain speech in national TV without bring a shit storm down on his organizations (or at least his own) head I'm going to be furious.

You've got to love that he backpedals (probably after someone out of frame told him to tone it down) immediately and says he was speaking figuratively.

Sort of like how statues were only going to be torn down figuratively. And then figuratively only Confederate statues, never Washington or Jefferson. And then figuratively speaking, they tore down Abraham Lincoln.

Or like how they were figuratively going to replace white people, but not figuratively kill them. And then figuratively have started to chant "kill all white people" in their protests.

And now they "figuratively" want to burn down America and destroy the system. Just like they have figuratively been burning down Democrat cities and attacking random people for figurative reasons.

Black Lives Matter is figuratively a peaceful group. And this was all figuratively about George Floyd.

You keep using that word.jpg
