The hilarious thing is that most people will know they're fake, but still use them anyway, and will chimp out if they don't get what they want.

Is this going to be the next reason for weeks of rioting complete with demands to abolish prison? How many people died in jail that day? they picked this guy cause his name was floyd too and it'd be easier to remember.

The biggest reason I have heard why this panned out so well was mostly twofold. The first was the British Empire was "acquired in a fit of forgetfulness" so each colony was somewhat independent of the others and pursued best economic practises locally. This meant using the native population as opposed to exploiting it endlessly.

The slave trade only came about because the rate of attrition in Britains Spice and Sugar island colonies was fucking horrific. So bodies were required for stuff which made hilarious amounts of money and had seen a collapse in white brits going there because North America was more amenable and less filled with deadly disease that killed you within an average of four years.

The second part is that slave ownership within the Empire's capital territory of the British Isles really never took hold or any popularity. It wasn't the same sort of status symbol as in other equivalent Empires and not something to parade around that you even owned them to begin with.

Oh, and most of our "slave colonies" were actually taken under direct control after we abolished Slavery. The biggest exporter of slaves was a Nigerian King who was told repeatedly to knock off flogging slaves to the Transatlantic traders sending stuff to America. When he told the British to fuck off, the British responded by fucking him off instead.
