I don't think they're suicidal, so much as they're trying to push the envelope on their kinks. They're trying to find a fetish that is more "hardcore" than their old ones. After they've finished, they're done and want to go back to their normal life.
 
Wasn't "Patient Zero", Gaetan Dugas, pretty much the same way? He had sex with as many guys as possible, and when he later found out he had AIDS, his response was pretty much "I don't regret any of it."?

I actually just looked it up and his status as patient zero is apparently being disputed, it's believed that the origin of the virus came from Africa and made its way to Haiti 1966 and then to the U.S. in 1969.

Makes sense to me, Africa is, after all, home to all the world's worst diseases and parasites.
