I think it's less about people's feelings being hurt, then it is trying to build a business and an indie comics scene through social media. If you're trying to build an indie comics scene on social media you want to cultivate a friendly, inviting environment, something that appeals not just to people on the inside, but to people watching from the outside. exceptional individuals and gay ops is neither appealing nor inviting. The way some dorks talk in public, "soy this and soy that, SJW sucks!" is appealing to only a handful of mouth breathing troglodytes. It's not professional. It's not the way a hotdog vendor presents himself.
Well, SJWs
do suck, and there isn't a sustainable indie comics scene outside of ComicsGate in no small part because of them. The mainstream is on life support.
It's also not professional to call the ComicsGate customer base "mouth breathing troglodytes" unless your plan is to join those SJWs.
In which case, good luck. They're all doing great.
The problem is that a few people got the bright idea to create websites that cater to "ComicsGate customers." These people think that crowdfunding campaigns are things that customers SHOP en masse. As if loads of people just want to browse a massive selection of $25 independent fund raising ventures to choose the ones they like best. A shopping mall for IndieGoGo.
That's just not how this works. Successful IGG campaigns are the result of hours and hours of personal interaction with a potential customer base. They require nonstop promotion and marketing, generating enthusiasm and interest, creating a feeling of one-on-one door to door salesmanship.
Rarely, and I mean RARELY, will a placed ad work. EARTHWORM JIM comes close to beating that model, because it's a known property. But most of us have to do footwork.
So these websites aren't a BAD idea, they just aren't really EFFECTIVE ideas. So I suggested this isn't something that should be done.
I didn't even realize that they'd come with an extra problem:
How does one determine who and what deserves placement on your website? Is this "Comicsgate?" What is ComicsGate?
Now you've found yourself in the unpleasant predicament of having to gatekeep.
Edwin Boyette's IndieChron gestured towards this gatekeeping when someone involved with it tried to keep Brad Ashworth's HANDYMAN off the site for associating with an undesirable editor. All Hell broke loose. Doug TenNapel said he would "burn IndieChron to the ground."
Chaos ensued, with War Campaign telling people that IndieChron was associated with doxxers (this "undesirable editor") and the Alt-Right. (Jon Del Arroz and Vox Day.) IndieChron faltered, and decided that gatekeeping was wrong, and would therefore just become a site that chronicles the Indie Comics Scene, which makes it essentially just a relisting of the Comics section of Kickstarter and IndieGoGo. Unless some books from those sites are still being kept off the list, which again, means the site is gatekeeping. So it's either redundant or it's a gatekeeper.
War Campaign decided to just flat out gatekeep: CG Only. They'd make a site determining what was Comicsgate and what wasn't, and then they went about telling creators that association with IndieChron would place them next to the Alt Right and doxxers, intimidating these small press creators.
That's what all of this is about. Fighting over how to do a completely unnecessary website that lists crowdfunding campaigns that may or may not be ComicsGate. This is what drove Edwin Boyette away from ComicsGate, and this is what War Campaign is currently being accused of.
