Pretty much. Just look at Woodrow Wilson, the ur-progressive of his day. He had a brilliant dream of a world peaceful and free if only everyone would just listen to him and do exactly what he said. And this generation, they've apparently dropped all pretense and started openly calling themselves socialists (which is what they really were all along, it wasn't self-delusion, many old socialists with second thoughts have said that "progressive" was just a name they used to present themselves to the public), they're starting to not care if the rest of the country doesn't want to hear it. While I agree with you on some points, the fear-mongering about socialism and the socialist party has to stop. Socialism is a stupid, stupid idea that fails wherever it is implemented, but the Socialist Party in America has a long history. Eugene Debs was one of the great 3rd party candidates, running numerous times in the first decades of the 20th century, often playing spoiler to the mainline candidates. It fell out of favor in the Cold War for obvious reasons, but to pretend that Americans have never flocked to the banner of Socialism in a mainstream and acceptable way is simply not backed up by the historical facts.

Nothing, because their utopia's failed every single time they tried it and now they're fatter and lazier than every previous generation of Communist/Socialists combined. There's too much technology and entertainment and comfort now for your first-world Communist to bother getting off of their ass, finding a Kalashnikov and getting to work. Yes and no. Think of socialism as a subset of Progressivism; it's a particular form of the utopian societal end state, and it requires authoritarian means to create and enforce. So modern socialists only find a home within Progressivism, while modern Progressives can be either corporatist, socialist, or technocrats (using subconscious nudges via behavorial economics).

I won't do the full off-topic rant about economics, but basically the state of macroeconomic theory is shit right now. A lot of what we "knew" doesn't work too well since 2008; the models lost predictive power. But people are feeling economic pressure and strain, even with "good numbers" like low unemployment, recovering GDP, and rising asset prices. The political right doesn't have a capitalist or free market based answer (which is how protectionist Trump got elected), and the left is falling back on reactionary socialism to address the political fallout, not the underlying economic issues.

If you watched the 2 nights of Democrat debates earlier this week, you may have noticed lots of them talking about income inequality and stagnant wages for the last 40+ years. They're right that wages are falling behind. But the solutions they pitched had nothing to do with wages, inflation, or productivity. They were all about what to do after wages were paid: higher taxes, more handouts, or Yang's UBI.

A good socialist would have tried to restructure the relationship between labor and capital, or nationalize a critical industry, or put in price ceilings/floors, etc. But even out-and-proud socialist Bernie Sanders just wanted taxes and handouts. The $15 living wage idea has been quietly dropped, once they saw that fast food workers could be replaced by robots. You may get candidates supporting the idea if asked, because they want to sound sympathetic, but it's an empty promise; no one is pushing it or supporting legislation for it.

Actually THEY HAVE NO CHOICE but to debate Trump. The media will be banking on the huge ratings the Presidential debates will get (Trump vs Hillary got MASSIVE ratings) and the base, especially the lunatic left, will DEMAND they go up against Trump and bloody his nose figuratively if not literally. Several liberals with severe TDS (including Bill Maher) have already stated, repeatedly at that, whoever gets the nomination has to draw public first blood during these debates and basically make Trump have a Lonesome Rhode style breakdown by way of publicly clowning on Trump and make Trump freak out and lose his cool/composure. All in the name of scaring the masses by making them go "Dear God, I can't believe I voted/wanted to re-elect this madman!". Not to mention Trump going after them as being cowards if they refuse to debate him.

Ironically though, if someone DOES end up calling off the Presidential debates, it would most likely would be Trump himself. For two reasons:

1. Trump realizes that the mainstream media will pull every dirty trick in the books to rig the debates against him. Be it giving the Democrat nominee the questions beforehand to constantly interrupting/humiliating Trump by "fact checking" everything Trump says to make it look like he's a pathological liar.

2. Trump deciding to deny the Democrat nominee the optics of publicly dueling with him in public. People have long forgotten, that televised Presidential debates are not mandatory. There was no Presidential debate in 1964, 1968, and 1972 as far as LBJ and Nixon refusing to do them.

Granted Trump boycotting would create it's own issues/backlash that the Democrats would exploit. Calling Trump a liar and giving fuel for the lunatic left and the media to further push their gaslighting agenda to cover up the corrupt media; by claiming that any accusations of corruption/the media rigging the debates for the Democrats is "conspiracy" talk.

But it cuts both ways, in that neither side can really back out on doing the debates for a variety of reasons.

It also overlooks that this stat is usually measuring only the raw dollars, but not the benefits. Studies have demonstrated that when you factor in things like health insurance and other perks, wages HAVE risen. But it's all going to the bonus goods and not dollars in pocket.

They were now pushing for radical and transgressive ideas and for some of them the public accepted, like gay marriage. 4. 2012 also brought into existence the now discredited "Changing Demographics" meme that 2012 was the "white man's last stand" and that the GOP would have no fucking choice but go full globalist cuck and be 100% for illegals flooding the nation, minorities, trans, and feminists getting special status as "superior people" for whom normal laws and social norms don't apply and can't be punished for their shit in order to be elected.

4. Obama's re-election and said demographic shift meme caused the lunatic left to accelerate their plans for globalist flavored fascism, thinking the masses were "ready" for acceleration. Obama would get credit for a lot of stuff, but the really fascist shit would go into effect once Hillary got elected. Because A. They wanted to "protect Obama's legacy" by not having him be the one to push the button making the nation go full commie fascist and B. Hillary was a sick fuck, who had a long as fuck enemies list and contempt for humanity, that she kind of wanted to be the one to press the button turning America into a commie dictatorship, where she was Queen.

5. Gamergate then happened, which threw a wrench into the acceleration plans. Depends. But a couple of factors to consider:

Obama and Hillary had a very tense relationship and Hillary having the tape spiked could have created a MASSIVE schism, especially among those who would accuse Hillary and her ilk purposely sabotaging Obama and helping Romney. No to mention removing the only thing that would have kept Biden from running as a spoiler towards Hillary in 2016 (IE Obama forcing Biden to kneel and not skip over Hillary, who the nomination had been promised to). Not to mention the idea that Obama might fight Hillary again in 2016 and try and win the Presidency again; especially if Obama knew Hillary purposely sat on damning material when he was busy eating shit out of Bill and Hillary's asses to get Bill out on the campaign trail shilling for him.

A straightforward loss with Hillary and her surrogates remaining clean and not trying to rig the race, was their only real option and hence them doing it.

Furthermore, there is the old "Obama Assassination Hypothesis" I've seen on 4chan: that if the elites knew what would happen, from 2013-2019 and how fast the nation would turn on the left due to their overreach? They would probably have had Obama assassinated shortly after he was sworn in on his second term and framed a member of the Tea Party for it. That way, the entire left would be consumed with a generational blood lust for revenge that would have anhiliated the right and Trump in particular and be able to accelerate shit even further than they ultimately did, using Obama's corpse as the sled they'd send the country sliding down to a one way trip to socialist fascist hell with Hillary as President in 2016. More so, it would have created such a fury, that something like Gamergate would never of gotten traction because the youth and middle aged folks red pilled by it would be distracted by the bloodlust fuel desire to destroy conservativism to avenge Obama; irrevocably radicalizing the to ensure they remain lunatic left foot soldiers for the rest of their lives.
