'Empire' star Jussie Smollett attacked in possible hate crime

“Empire" actor Jussie Smollett was attacked in the early morning hours on Tuesday in what Chicago police are calling a possible hate crime.

Smollett was attacked by two people "yelling out racial and homophobic slurs" and "poured an unknown chemical substance on the victim," police said.

According to police, one of Smollett's alleged attackers also put a rope around his neck. Both fled the scene.

Smollett took himself to Northwestern Hospital and "is in good condition," police told CNN.

Later Tuesday, CNN's Don Lemon spoke to Smollett and a mutual friend who was at the hospital with the actor. Smollett confirmed the incident took place.

He was shaken and angry that an attack like this could happen. Smollett told CNN he fought back at the attackers.

"Given the severity of the allegations, we are taking this investigation very seriously and treating it as a possible hate crime," the police statement said.

Smollett has starred on Fox's "Empire" since 2015. He plays Jamal, a successful singer in the musical Lyon family. Like his character, Smollett identifies as gay.

"We are deeply saddened and outraged to learn that a member of our 'Empire' family, Jussie Smollett, was viciously attacked last night," a representative of 20th Century Fox Television and Fox Entertainment said in a statement to CNN. "We send our love to Jussie, who is resilient and strong, and we will work with law enforcement to bring these perpetrators to justice. The entire studio, network and production stands united in the face of any despicable act of violence and hate -- and especially against one of our own."

A representative for GLAAD told CNN the organization has reached out Smollett to offer assistance and support.

"Jussie is a true champion for LGBTQ people and is beloved by the community and allies around the world," a GLAAD spokesperson said in a statement.

Like any fake crime.

To me it seems more important than ever to be reminded that people lie. We got powerful people pushing to always believe certain victims. Social media easily jumps on rumors and forms mobs to ruin people's lives. Traditional media is ready to make any huge headlines to desperately get more clicks, and alternative media does the same but also to push a narrative.

There are many people out there who's ready to lie about anything, and we have created an environment where lying about being a victim can give you a lot of attention (and even money in some cases) with few downsides. There are bound to be a lot of frauds here, and it's important that people start realizing that.

It's pretty scary that people are so willing to instantly believe a false crime like that with no evidence. Obviously it can be bound to go bad if someone claims that an innocent person hurt them. Wasn't that basically the Salem Witch Trials?

What's that? I was right because I know what I am talking about when it comes to BBC editorial guidelines that they're increasingly in the firing line over? They can comment on it because it comes from Police Sources?

They are reporting about US media reports about what the police sources say the police believe. YOU. ARE. A. FUCKING. DICKHEAD.

The BBC editorial guidelines will probably be absolutely perfect in stating that they want their reporters to report the facts in an honest, fair and impartial manner.

The BBC don't even begin to pretend that they actually report the news like that. Their massive bias is absolutely clear.

My guess is that they threw up that minor taking back of the media fuck up because their bias would have been totally exposed if they'd offered no retraction at all. That's what they've done with Covington.

It wouldn't surprise me if the BBC ditch this story completely from now on. Smollett gets arrested, charged and jailed, but the BBC have suddenly come to the decision that it's no longer a story worth reporting on.

Thank you for your responses. This isn't the first time the Matthew Shepard case has been brought up in the thread, or the first time the alternate theory has been brought up. Look at your reactions. "This is a conspiracy theory you would have to be stupid to believe." Less than 15 minutes of independent research later. "The groups that profited off of this story and used it to push an agenda may have been lying to me. I need more information." All it takes is the willingness to question what someone is selling you. And they are selling you the news; all of it, even the stuff you agree with. How much they are spinning it is the question.

I have to give Jussie credit where credit is due as well. He has so far gone this whole circus without invoking the 6 GORRILION. I really have no idea what it's like for blacks with jews other than DAS RITE, maybe they try to hide it for some reason. Willing to bet basically any other jewish celebrity would have thrown it out by this point. Do we want to start a pool on whether or not it gets pulled out of the deck before his confession/plea deal?
 
Estimate the number of real hate crimes (crimes motivated by a bias or animus towards a person based on their minority/oppressed status) vs hate crime hoaxes?

I reflexively distrust basically anyone looking to turn their victimhood into media attention (mattress girl, the dykey waitress who claimed customers threatened her via receipt, this case) butI I struggle to have an accurate sense of what the real numbers might look like .
 
Hate crimes are ridiculous anyway. Things that aren't even crimes become a hate crime if the victim thinks it is. Murder is not serious enough, we've got to have a super bad murder if it was driven by hate. I don't know about you fuckers, but all the murders I've done have been because of my love for my victims.

I watch Matt Christiansen's show on YouTube and he often has a Hoax Hate of the Week section. At a guess there have been 15 bullshit hoaxers, 1 genuine and 1 unclear.

I don't know if you'd call it projection, or what... but people seem to *want* to see hate crimes, even where they don't exist. When the reality is that almost no one is going out beating or killing people *because* they're black or gay or trans.

After five years straight of hate crime hoaxes it's becoming mainstream to adopt the hard and fast rule of doubting hate crimes if you hear about them. Imagine how delusional and insane our press had to be to lead to this point.

"Hate Crime? Miss me with that fake news bullshit!" -average informed citizen now

There are hate crimes that aren't hoaxes but do not seem to be played up as much as the ones that turn out to be phony by the press, like when those black people in Chicago kidnapped a mentally retarded white kid because they thought he was a Trump supporter and tortured him on Facebook live and somehow it wasn't being constantly reported on network TV news with constant updates and didn't have respectable commentators spending hours discussing it on cable news, huh wonder why.
